Ammo Gun Safe
Suggestions for firearms in the wake of a USA meltdown?
I've never owned a firearm before, but I'm looking for an easy-to-use, easy-to-clean, reliable pistol and a durable rifle.
I plan on keeping these in their boxes, in a safe, and unused until/if the fabric of this society starts breaking down.
In that kind of scenario, what gun(s) would you want to have in your closet? How much and what kind of ammo would you want to have stockpiled?
Revolver - .357(also uses .38) very common chambering
Pistol - 9mm or 45ACP, 2 very common chamberings
Shotgun - 12ga, any make, pump action, very common chambering
Rifle - 30/30 lever action, or .308 bolt action, 2 very common chamberings
Revolvers never fail to feed, or extract. Very easy to maintain and operate. No magazines to lose or damage.
Semi-auto Pistols have higher capacity, are easy to reload rapidly, but do occasionally fail to feed or extract. If you get in a hurry and fail to release the safety, it won't fire. If you lose a magazine, you have one less magazine. If you lose all of your magazines, you have a single shot pistol.
But no matter what weapon you get, you need to practice with it. If you are not thoroughly familiar with your weapons, they are next to useless to you.

Taurus PT99, +p, +p+ ammo safe to use?
I have a Taurus Pt99 9mm semi auto handgun, and I can't find my owners manual for it, and I was wondering if it would be safe to use +p and +p+ ammo in it. The gun is about 10-12 years old and in good condition.

If you write to taurus or go to there website they will send you a new manual for free. Any Taurus weapon i have ever seen is able to safely fire +p or +p+ ammo, but according to the manual it "may shorten the life span of your weapon" really just about any modern weapon in good condition should be able to fire +p or +p+
