How do I backup my computer?

I am pretty idiotic when it comes to computers. How do I make a backup disk and will this backup save everything on my computer--all of my documents and photos etc?

Also, are there things I should do to my computer every now and then? someone said once that I should defrag it but I don't even know what that means. any help would be great. I have a laptop and haven't done anything for a year.

What is the best method to use to backup computer data, and Why?

Such as pictures, videos, music, documents, files etc. External hard drives, Internal RAID setups, DVD's, online storage etc etc..... what are the pros and cons, and which is the best, most bulletproof mehod?

While RAID is great for redundancy, it should not be considered a backup.

The two most methods I usually recommend to people are to use an external drive or another computer to store local backups. The backups can be created with the built in Windows Backup utility if you need to make backups of locked files, or if locked files are not an issue a simple copy to the external drive or other computer.

I also highly recommend people keep an off site backup using an online backup service. Most online backup services offer the ability to backup all your data and a fairly inexpensive price. They can also be scheduled to backup your data several times during the day so you don't need to worry about remembering to backup.

Don't rely on only one type of backup in case one fails. Local backups are great but you can still lose everything if the external drive is stolen. Online backups are great but restores can fail using them as well.
