Black Dial
What year did British Telecom discontinue the old circular dial on the front telephones.?
You know the ones I mean, They came in various coulours red,green,cream,black. And had a circular dial on the front instead on push buttons.
Please read the question!!!!!!! I am not asking Why did they discontinue them I am asking if anyone knows what year they were discontinued.
The last standard dial phone I remember was the old 706 which was an inheritance of BT's from Post Office Telephones if memory serves. Dial phones were on their way out from the 70's onwards but there were still plenty of them in the early 1980s and I believe it was about 84 or 85 when the stocks ran out. I know I saw some working as late as 89. I believe BT have replaced the majority as they wore out but a lady came in to our place last year requiring a new phone that we couldn't supply her because her wall socket was still a hard-wired GPO type and hadn't been modernised or even looked at since 1972!
I worked for what remained of Post Office Telephones (looking after our own switches, line and plant) which was then a division of RoMec from 97 until we were finally outsourced to Siemens in 2001. We had a couple of these in the back covered with dust, so I re-wired them to fit in the click socket. One still worked, so I gave it to my Mother as a novelty. She's using it in her bedroom extension still.

Breitling Super Avenger Review Black Dial
I have a All black cordless Vtech phone with with answering machine and there is no dial tone?
i have a black cordless VTech phone that has an answering machine. the volume is up and if i hit a button the volume works the lcd screen works it shows its charging, and everything. but there is no dial tone as soon as i go to make a call there is no dial tone and when i people call the house it doesnt ring PLEASE HELP
You do not mention, but I am assuming that the phone never worked, and you do not mention DSL so I assume that it is just a phone line. You do not mention if there are other phones that work in the house.
First take your phone to a neighbour's house, unplug their phone and plug in the base for the Vtech, check for dial tone. If it works then your phone is good, if it does not work then check to make sure that the cables are plugged into the base properly. If all of the connections are good, you may have a bad cable between the jack and the base, you might try another one. If that does not work, then you may have a defective phone.
If a neighbour has an older phone that is not wireless, see if you can borrow it as it makes the next tests easier. Find the demarcation box that the Telco installs on the outside of the house. It is the point between the Telco outside wiring and your inside wiring. Open the box and inside there should be labelling that indicates the Telco side jack. Unplug the cable in that jack and plug in the phone (if it is the Vtech base, then you will need to power it as well), if there is no dial tone then the Telco needs to fix their connections to your house. If there is dial tone, then you have to fix the problem with the wiring in the house. Make sure that the connections in the demarcation point are firm, push on plugs to make sure that they are seated properly, then close the box.
Open the jack that the Vtech is usually connected to, and make sure that the connections are tight, reassemble the jack. Check other jacks, as the one that you use may be daisy chainned through them, also make sure that the jacks do not have dust in them as moisture can condense in the dust and short the jack. Look for cables chewed by pets.
