Help, my chickens are dying in the extreme heat. I have them on a wet blanket, i pour water over them too. some won't eat or drink. The combs are losing their redness, and their balance isn't good. Are they reviveable? I changed the location to a windy outdoors area out of sunlight. I blitzed in the blender some banana and water, but they won't drink. Are they going to keep dying, is there anything else I can do? One chicken's eyes turned red, and they sleep too much.
I think the question needs to be answered in two separate parts, attention to the distressed birds & attention to their surroundings, would have like to know, how many birds are involved & their age, what is the outside temperature?
Any method of keeping the surroundings cooler than they are, should be tried straight away,we face gruelling summer haet in India. Here poultry authoroties adivse hanging of wet old curtains, hessian sheets etc across windows or under running fans, this helps in reducing temperature by a couple of degrees.Mix an electrolyte powder into drinking water & feed the birds using a syringe, until they can drink on their own.Fluids at such a stage are vital.
Before setting up or building a coop one must think of summer heat, they should be large shady trees to keep the roof cool. We even lay hay or other such material on the roof to keep the roof from heating up. I have many leafy trees around , so even with heat up in the lower forties celsius,my free range birds find spots for comfort, they go into hiding all day & come out to forage after the evening has cooled.

How to remove blanket weed?
I've got a small pond (4ft by 2.5 ft) and am plauged by blanket weed. I have tried using barley straw extract and blanket weed buster. The water is clear but the blanket weed wont go away. I have tried manually removing it with a stick but it comes back after a week or two. I have 1 water lilly and some canadian pond weed, there are no fish in the pond. How can I stop the blanket weed coming back again?
Blanket weed needs nutrients and sunlight in order to grow, so if you can restrict these, you will limit its potential for growth.
I shade my pond as much as possible, though my water lillies need sunlight, so total eradication isn't feasible for me, and probably you too. I also have floating decoration - a hippo's head (OK not to everyone's taste, but it's cute and shades the water).
I also use a new product that's been around for just a couple of years, which is Cloverleaf' 'Blanket Answer', which is a mix of natural enzymes and minerals. It works really well, and I repeat a couple of times a year. You can now buy it from many aquiatic centres, so it's worth shopping around. http://www.swelluk.com/pond/pond-treatments-and-test-kits-35/algae-treatments-277/cloverleaf-blanket-answer-10310.html
Interpet also have a blanket weed killer, though I find that this Cloverleaf product works better than it does. http://www.bradshawsdirect.co.uk/BradshawsSite/pages/product/product.asp?prod=AHEB&cookie%5Ftest=1
Otherwise, look for other liquid barley straw extracts, which prevents you having to sink bales of straw into your pond, and is natural too.
Ensure that there is no water from your garden filtering down into your pond via run-off too, as this will add the nutrients that you need. Also remove any dead or decaying plant matter, as soon as you are able to, as this also releases nutrients back into the water. I dead head my water lillies, and removing decaying leaves in my smaller pond.
Remove as much manually as is possible, so that the control additives have a smaller amount to work on. Cloverleaf starts working immediately, and 3 or 4 days later youy should be mainly clear of the stuff. Remove any dead blanket weed if possible too, as this will also contain nutrients.
My pond is currently clear of blanket weed, and this year's control has been easier as I had nearly full control last year.
Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
