Securing Your Money Outside of the Banks
In times of current economic crisis, nervous people have a tendency to hold onto liquid assets. Amidst financial turmoil, many people have taken their money out of the stock market and even their banks. Even with FDIC insured deposits, many people gain a sense of security by keeping a portion of their assets in their own hands. So where are people stashing their cash these days -Home safes! One of the first steps in deciding what is the best safe for your home is to identify what it is that you want to keep safe. Jewelry? Cash? Documents? These safes come in different types including Gun Safes, Fire Safes, Wall Safes, High Security Safes, and more. Many offer smoke, water, and fire resistance and the ability to securely bolt the safe to a floor or wall. Depending on the size of the safe that you need, you can expect to pay around $250 for a basic safe while commercially rated safes can run towards $3,000 and need to be professionally installed. Generally speaking, the heavier the safe, the stronger the safe will be.
Many safes are designed to protect against specific threats. A safe designed to protect against burglary, might not protect from fires and vice versa. Numerous ratings exist for safes, but one of the most important ratings to consider is the TL and TR on a safe. The TL rating refers to the tool rating. So for an example, a safe with a TL30 rating, means that it would take a burglar about 30 minutes to drill into the safe. TR stands for torch. TR30 would mean it would take about 30 minutes for a torch tool to burn a hole in the safe. Also, consider the heat resistance of a safe and that the safe has a UL (Underwriters Laboratories) rating. The ratings usually come in three categories.
Class A Safe -- Protects documents for up to 4 hours at 2000°F.
Class B Safe -- Protects documents for up to 2 hours at temperatures up to 1850°F
Class C Safe -- Protects documents for up to 1 hour at temperatures up to 1700°F
Once you’ve determined what type of safe will work to protect your cash and valuables, be sure to choose a safe with a locking method that works best for your needs. Home safes come with key, combination, and fingerprint (biometric) locking mechanisms. Study carefully and choose the best safe for you.
