Build Secret Safe Room
Converting 120v AC home electric to 12v DC for secret room project. Is there an electrician in the house?
I'm building a secret room in my house. I want to be able to access the latch for the door thustly..... Using an automotive window motor which runs on 12vDC, have a small panel (roughly 20x30) slide down to reveal a latch or handle which opens a secret door. I'm confident I can get the window switch to work properly but I need a safe way to convert standard home voltage to 12vDC while minimizing the risk of burning my house down and home owners not paying out cause I rigged some half ass thing myself.
I agree with everything that Irv S has said. I would also like to add that the transformer must (& I stress MUST) be adequately protected. This can be achieved by using a single pole circuit breaker to match the size of the transformer (if sized according to Irv S's method). This circuit breaker should be placed in line with one of the transformer Primary wires.
For example, if the transformer is rated at 300VA & the Primary voltage is 120 volts, the circuit breaker could be rated at 2.5 or 3 amps. The only problem is that these size breakers are difficult to find & are more expensive than the usual sizes. Alternatively, you could use HRC fuses to do the same job.
Once you start dabbling with "household" electricity, you MUST follow the wiring rules of your country/state etc. To not do this constitutes breaking the law & can be very dangerous if you are not a qualified person.
Your best bet is to hire an electrician to ensure that your transformer is properly connected to your domestic supply.
