Spud gun = egg gun? (School project)?
A little while back I built a potato cannon. Now, at school, we are expected to build something to launch an egg 150 meters for a project. I was wondering if my spud gun could double as an egg gun? (details below)
The barrel to my spud gun is 70 millimeters and launches via combustion of propane, so what I would do to keep the egg safe and make sure it fills enough of the barrel to get the full effect of the combustion is create a styrofoam casing for the egg which would keep the egg safe as it was launched out of the barrel, then hopefully, because the egg would be much heavier than the casing and be less likely to be held back due to air resistance, the egg would separate from the case.
Essentially I would like to know if my idea for the casing is plausible/practical?
sounds plausible--it's just like how a shotgun works to shoot out all those little pellets--air slows down the casing much quicker than the pellets. I see a good chance that the egg might break just from the acceleration in the barrel, however, but you'll have to try it to know for sure. You might have better chances for survival if your egg fits very snugly in the foam casing?
When you use a gas combustion charge, your greatest force happens at the very beginning and decreases as the egg travels down the barrel, since the gas is expanding and cooling. Compare that to gunpowder, which is designed to burn evenly and relatively slowly during barrel travel. If you could figure a way of making that gas burn slowly so that it finishes burning just as your egg leaves the barrel, then you might decrease breakage. Otherwise, I'd consider looking into something like a large slingshot that might spread that launching impulse over a greater distance.
