Travelling through dangerous places?
Hey guys,
I am planning my next solo sojourn through the Eastern parts of Turkey bordering Iran and Iraq. The thing is that Turkey is going to elections on 12June ( during the time I plan to visit the region ), and there is already some unrest in a few scattered places. The good news is that we are not talking about sniper guns and bombs. Instead it will mostly be water cannons and tear gas. I trully hope that there is not a terrorist attack, though there are pretty good chances as I want to travel through the Kurdish parts.
I really want to go through these places and the fact is this might be a good opportunity to travel, and may be I might not have a window to travel to these regions in the near future, if I do not use this opportunity. So any suggestions / advise or words of hope that I shall be safe and sound through my 3 weeks in this region are welcome.
One can never be 100% but need to plan for "just-in-case" situation. First, make sure you have the appropriate insurance coverage in case you need to be evacuated. Secondly, do a research to check if there are any international organisations or NGOs located in the specific areas that you will be visiting, so that you can call upon them for assistance in case of emergency. Thirdly, make sure you have the contact of your embassy or nearest consular office to contact in case of emergency.
In addition, be very sensitive to the local cultures and religious beliefs. Locals tend to get very emotional during the election time. The majority on the eastern Turkey are muslims, and I always find smiling and be respectful earn me friendship in some places that many foreigners consider "hostile" (e.g. remote parts of northeastern Pakistan.)
