Depositing non-HSBC checks into an HSBC ATM?
I received a $30 check in the mail from my Grandmother's local bank. On my college campus they have an HSBC ATM with a slot to deposit checks. Does this only work for checks from HSBC bank or will I be able to deposit/ cash this check in the ATM?
If the cheque is written to you in the same currency as your account (Probably US dollars in your case), then you can deposit it into your account at the ATM regardless of which bank issued the cheque. There is no extra charge for accepting or depositing a cheque from another bank either.
The only time you need to worry is if the check was written in another currency (British Pounds, Canadian Dollars, etc), or if the amount is larger than a bank machine can accept (somewhere around $50,000 or more) at which point you need to walk into the bank to deposit the cheque.

Im 18 and I need to establish credit whats the best way?
Ok well I've read slot of the Q & A's and I really have been getting mixed signals. Alot of people are saying don't get 1 then some are saying get 1 so I'm asking to make sure. I just turned 18 this month and I have no credit, I tried to get a cellphone but I need a 400$ deposit but I'm going to do it so I can establish credit that way. I also have a checking and savings account along with a debit card for my cash flow(I dont carry cash) I have direct deposit from my jobs. What I am trying to ask is what is the best credit card out there to get to establsih credit I dont one with annual fee's and high APR. I am responsibile I have 2 jobs I work at hollister for about 3 days a week for some easy money lol and my opther job is my main source of income for now. I work in the credit card industry manually reviewing reports to either approve or deny credit to people that apply, so I would have firsthand knowledge of what you're looking for.
The ideal card would be one with NO annual fee, a 0% introductory and low (10.99%/max) APR, benefits program, and high starting credit limit. If you don't have much of a credit history, it will be much harder to try to get cards like this. What I would suggest would be to check where you do your banking to see if they offer what's called a "secured" credit card. These work pretty much the same as a regular card only that a security deposit which is used as collateral is placed upfront to determine the credit limit. For example, if you deposit $300, then you could purchase up to $300, and pay back $300. The deposit is used for collateral only when the account is sent to collections, but if you pay on time, usually after a year it's given back to you. 2 main benefits to secured cards is that it give you more control over the credit limit by adding to the deposit, and the deposit is sometimes linked to a savings account, which earns interest while you're building credit, so it's just not sitting there. The more you add to the deposit, the higher the limit, the better your score will get becuase 30% of your score counts on how much credit you have to what you're using. 2 more benefits from secured cards is that by you putting up the deposit with your own money, it makes you more disciplined in managing the card, especially since the deposit would be at stake, and it also helps to start up an emergency fund when you get the deposit back later on.
I also want you to be aware of some cards out there that target people that have trouble getting approved for credit, or trying to rebuild their credit. These cards are easy to get, but they're loaded with hidden fees that are charged which reduce your available credit and leave you with a bill to pay before you even get the card in the mail. Tribute, First Premier, and New Millenium are prime examples of this.
I'll list some of the things you should do, which you've done some already to help establish credit:
1. Open a checking account- While opening the account doesn't directly build your credit, it does create a relationship between you and the bank by being an accountholder. Banks love to cater to their preferred customers that have accounts in great standing by offering loans and credit cards. Also, having a checking account not only helps manage your money, but it gives you the most powerful tool in building credit, a checking account to help pay your bills on time. Most banks and credit unions offer online banking with billpay that can make it easy for you to pay your bills on time, which is important in building credit.
2. Open a secured credit card- Secured credit cards are the easiest credit cards to get, mainly becuase a security deposit is placed upfront in order to establish a line of credit in the same amount. For example, if you deposit $250, your credit limit is $250, and so on. The deposit isn't used to pay for any of the purchsases on the card unless, it was charged off and sent to collections, so you would have to repay it just like a regular card either in full or minimum monthly payments. The deposit is sometimes linked to a savings account, so it earns interest while you're building credit, so the deposit isn't sitting there. You can think of this as building credit with a savings account. The more you deposit, the higher your limit, which is good for your score because it creates a cushion between the total debt you owe and the credit you have available. Also, by continuing to add to the deposit, you're also creating an emergency fund at the same time. A good way of using the card is by making small purchases ($20/month max) and paying on time every month while adding to the deposit. Usually after a year or so, the card either converts or upgrades to a regular card, and most importantly, the deposit is given back, which you can place in a savings account as an emergency fund.
