Help teaching "carry and hold" to my young dog.?

Years ago, I successfully taught a sheltie to "carry" pretty much any object on command -- from hand or off the floor. Admittedly, that sheltie was increadibly smart and very young when I taught it, so my methods didn't have to be perfect. Now I have a wonderful German Shepherd mix (8 months old) who is wonderful at fetching, returning, and catching frisbees in the air, but for the life of me, I cannot get her to simply take and hold an object. Specifically, she will open her mouth and accept the object on the command "carry" but immediately drops it without even attempting to hold it. I have tried this with her Kong, rawhide bones, plastic training dummies, and even her frisbee. For some reason, she has gotten it into her head that "carry" means I'm going to put something into her mouth which she will immediately drop. What am I doing wrong? I thought this awesome power-chewer and frisbee chaser would love to learn this trick.

I would suggest trying to slowly advance her in holding it for longer periods of time....

Try using treats for this.....

WHen she first gets the object in mouth from your hand say hold and then take it right back into your hand from her before she has the chance to drop it...reward with treat to mark the wanted behavior.

repeat,repeat,repeat.....see if she begins to catch on to the marked behavior as being........you want the object in her mouth when you command hold.......just goes to show tht each dog is a unique animal reguardless of breed......

gradually try to extend the time after you command hold and the time you command her to give the object back.....

Always mark the correct behavior as being the fact that she has the object inher mouth by rewarding with treat once you retrive the object from her...don't reward wit h treat,if she temporarliy holds it but then drops it before you retrieve the object from her mouth...

Maybe this will help???

Some dogs just aren't interested in carrying around things. My last mal was a fetch and run with it dog, go lay down with it and chew it up type....I read malamutes aren't into fetching, but my new one......she demands we fetch with her to the point that at the dog park she will gather up all the other dogs tennis balls laying aounrd the park into one pile and lay with them until someone, anyone, myself or stranger walks up and throws them every known direction for her to go get....lol...just shows that each dog is it's own unique animal reguardless of breed.....

A question for those who only use positive reinforcement..?

How well does your dog do off leash at a distance? I'm not trying to start an argument or entice a reaction, I am genuinely curious. Again, this is for people who strictly use positive reinforcement. Treats, clicker training, etc. Have you ever taken a dog who was a really bad squirrel chaser and trained him to the point where he will break off the chase 100 yards away and come straight to you? Or when he/she bolts and you give it a come command, does he/she stop immediately and come back to you? Thanks!
anne b- that's exactly why I asked the question, to see if strictly positive reinforcement works successfully off leash.

I have collies and always used positive reinforcement. The best method I've found is to start when they are puppies and anytime they get farther away than you want them ( about 50 feet is my preference ) call them to you, which most puppies willingly do, and when they come give them a treat or praise. Don't give them a treat every time though or else they come to expect it every time. I whistled when I wanted them to come back. Now at two and three the dogs never go farther away from me than 50ft and anytime I want them to come I just whistle. With an older dog its a little harder. Use the same method but start out on a long leash. Repeat the method and gradually increase the distance between you and your dog. It will take longer than with a puppy but it works. As far as the squirrels, our collies herd the ducks, goats, or whatever is out at the moment but when we call them they stop and come. I guess that would depend on the dog.

Yes, it is very good, you are just communicating with the dog through body language.
