Combatives Police
Des the Army Combatives program have any benefit for combat?
I was looking at some videos of the Army hand to hand combat system, and it just looks like MMA. Is that the only hand to hand combat training the Army gives to their soldiers? And if so, does it work? Not to disrespect any service men or women, but my father who served as a Police Officer for 20 Years said that if that is all they train, he feels bad for the troops because is useless in real situations.
The training offered differs based on your MOS
from my understanding, those who are most likely to have hand-to-hand situations, such as infantry, are the ones who are given priority to train such things to
other MOS's which are less likely to have hand-to-hand combat, such as military intelligence, can take classes to learn combatives however its not a requirement to learn past the basics
There are 3 different levels of combatives training,
the first most basic level being what all military persons are taught reguardless their job
the other two become more intense, and unless you have a certain MOS, these are optional classes
not required
Of course the exception to all rules is black ops forces, which are supposedly taught things that the rest of us couldn't even imagine, though who really knows?
Granted, all of this is being said by an Army Wife

When I get out of the Army?
Ok, couple of questions - first, the background:
Lots of schools, incl. Air Assault & Combatives
Years in the Active Duty Army
Female
What are the chances I'll be able to make it onto a SWAT team in a major city (Detroit, to be exact)?
Does prior military help you to get on a police force (other than the obvious ways, like knowing how to react) - like will that get you some sort of preference before you're hired?
Are there age ranges for SWAT in most places, and do females have a prayer?
Any help would be appreciated - thanks in advance!
Prior military does help as long as you have an Honorable on your 214. It satisfies many departments 64 Credit requirement.
SWAT, ESU and the likes are part of a department. You need first be on for a while and get a "hook" that can help you get into specialized units. Without that for a good part a guy who never held a firearm until coming on the job has a better chance to get in a unit than you, even with your respected portfolio.
