Commercial Safes
Are big commercial airplanes safer than smaller ones?
I thought I heard somewhere that the big jumbo airplanes are usually safer than the smaller ones. Anyone know?
In Terms of maintenance they are generally better cared for but if a small plane crashes it kills fewer people as fewer are on board and less fuel and size to burn up people on the ground.
Most fixed based operators take fairly good care of their leased aircraft but it only takes one nut or drunk twisting wrenches to bring an airplane down in addition to normal wear and tear and age.
Small aircraft are not very cost effective to operate in this day. Not like they use to be. I could rent a 4 seater for 18 dollars an hour wet ( full of fuel) when I first started flying. Now it costs close to a hundred bucks an hour for the same aircraft.

If rockets can be sent to the moon, why can’t commercial airplanes be made safer?
Why can't commercial airplanes be designed in such a way that when it develops problems in the air, the pilot can just press a button and hundreds of massive parachutes will shoot out from its sides and slowly drop the plane to the ground.
Why can't commercial airplanes be made in such a way that the pilot can press a button and every one will be ejected, like is the case in fighter jets?
Why can't commercial airplanes be designed in such a way that there will be a small parachute under each seat. And people can just strap on the parachutes and jump off before the plane crash lands?
Space travel is by far more dangerous than commercial flying, if you take the total number of flights and divide them by the number of fatal accidents the figures will prove without a doubt that commercial aircraft are much safer.
As far as the other questions, parachutes for airliners are a non starter for several reasons. First to get the required amount of surface area that would be needed to carry a passenger aircraft almost all the passenger cabin would have to be taken up by the parachutes. Secondly most passenger aircraft fly at high speed and parachutes can only open below a fairly slow speed.
Interestingly aircraft parachutes are used on light aircraft were the speed and weight is lower.
Ejector seats are another non starter again for several reasons, first often during flight passengers are out of there seats or don't have there seat belts fasterned. Secondly there would be a huge increase in the aircraft weight with all the additional ejector seat weight. Third and probably most important, the roof of a commertial plane is a load bearing structure and to allow passenger to eject would require it to be constructed from light weight material that would rip open during an ejection. Also at the altertude planes fly there is little or no O2 to breath as well as being -40c.
Jumping out of a aircraft at +300mph is imposible and death would be assured is jumping from a 747 at full speed.
Sorry mate all good ideas but currently they are all non starters.
