Compact Safe Am I able to paint the bulb of a Compact Fluorescent Light to tone down the bright neon glow?
I'm trying to do my part in helping to save our earth, BUT, I cannot stand the color the CFL's cast onto my walls. It feels like being in a hospital cafeteria. I want to paint the bulb a creamy golden color in order to soften the light a little? Is this even an option or is it not safe? Does anyone have any expert tips?
Not a real good idea. All electrical home equipment is carefully designed to reject the waste heat that is produced, There are special clear coatings thet might serve, but you can't be sure of finding the proper material. There are 'warm' color CFL lamps sold. Use one of those.

I have a three way lamp, and have a 3 way bulb in it. Is it safe to replace that bulb with those compact flourescent bulbs that save electricity, but, obviously don't have the three way function.
Yes.
The three-way light is only a three-way light because you have a three-way bulb. Otherwise, it's just a lamp. A regular incandescent will function just fine. So will the compact flourescents.
Get the flourescents, but take care on the number of flumens and the "color" of the light before you buy to insure some measure of happiness with the lighting.
