How do i play unsupported data files on Windows Media Player?
Basically i've downloaded a movie and I want to watch it through Windows Media Player but when i try playing it it only plays the sound and those weird colorful lines come up. It says something about codecs at the bottom can someone help me download the right codecs so it works or just show me how to make it work another way? Thanks a lot..
Yes that is to do with codecs. Because you didn't specify the file extension of the video you're having trouble with I can't actually guide you to the specific codec that you need.
If you can't see the file extension then you need to go in your folder setting and untick hide file extensions for known file types.
To do this in XP.
1. Open up any folder.
2. Click tools
3. Click folder options
4. Click the view tab
5. Untick hide extensions for known file types
To do this in Vista
1. Go to your control
2. Click folder options
3. Repeat steps 4 & 5 above.
A good free codec pack for you to get is the K-Lite Codec Pack. It's free. You can get it here.

Once you've installed that if you still can't play the video properly then that would mean that the codec you need isn't included in the K-Lite Codec Pack. So you will have to download it manually. To find out which one you need you will first need to know the file extension. For example you may have a video with a file extension of .RMVB. Well the standard K-Lite Codec Pack doesn't support this format, so you would have to download the codec manually.
You can find this out by typing in Google How to play .rmvb files.
Then from the results you would of seen that there's two ways of playing .rmvb files. One is to get Real Player. Or two is to get Real Alternative.
