Dehumidifier Heat Free
Why is the house still Cold & Damp?
I live in an old end terrace house (2 Bedrooms) The whole house is fully double glazed, boiler is in good working condition, and the house is cold & damp. We bought a Dehumidifier, which has taken alot of water out of the house but we seem no better off. Down stairs is alright with the heating on, but when we go upstairs, christ its cold. My baby is due Feb 09 and im frightend its going to be to cold for her. The loft is also insulated, which was done last year & we dont have a cavity wall so we cannot insulate that. If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to comment. Thanks alot, Michelle
The lack of a cavity to insulate seems to be the problem.
No cavity tends to mean damp passing from outside to inside. If I were you I would acquire a couple of tins of 'Aquaseal Ultra' and a 4 inch brush and paint it on the external walls. Start at the top and work down. Do west facing wall first. This material is colourless and very easy to apply. It is also very effective at repelling water. Don't confuse this stuff with the silly ads for damp treatment. Aquaseal Ultra is available at all DIY stores. It is not cheap but it will stop all water ingress. Trust me.

Technical Heat Pump question. If the therm. is set for 72 and the outside temp is 80+.?
Will the unit satisfy my heating needs way faster if the outside temp is "150" degrees or 35? If I was to take free heat and add it around the condenser would that take my inside temp down super fast? Im thinking of taking exhaust air from a dehumidifier (hot) and ducting it around my HP condenser in hopes that the HP will not run take as long to get to temp. Thanks for any suggestions.
Sorry, this is a commecial building. The dehum burns the moisture off the desicant wheel with a burner, causing a constant exaust of moist hot air that already is blowing. I was thinking of running duct off that to the HP condenser. So there is no +/- pressure issues, or indoor humidity issues. Could there be a problem where the unit in heating mode and the "hot outside air" is to hot for the refridgerant and causes a problem for the compressor?
A heat pump relies on heat content of the outdoor air to provide the btu's required to keep your home comfortable. If the heat available at the outdoor unit is increased, the unit will not have to work as hard as it would without the extra heat. When the temperature outside dips below about 35 to 45 degrees, there are fewer btu's available and usually supplemental heat is required. The supplemental heat may be from electric resistance type heaters, a natural gas or propane fired furnace, oil burners, etc. If you have a method of directing additional heat to the outdoor unit, it will act as if there is a higher temperature outside. There will of course be some wasted energy that does not make it into the refrigerant, but any additional heat energy will make it easier for the HP to work. Heat pumps are excellent units when there is a sufficent quantity of heat available, but it has to work harder when the ambient temperature is low. Another issue you may run into is ice on the outdoor coil. If the exhaust from the dehumidifier is moist air it will be providing additional moisture around the outdoor coil and that will freeze. Freezing moisture on the outdoor coil is a normal process and is dealt with by the defrost cycle of the heat pump. If you provide additional moisture above and beyond what the outdoor air contains, you will make more ice than before. Most heat pumps have changeable time lengths for defrost. These vary from every 30 minutes to 90 minutes. You may find it necessary to choose a setting of less time so that you are able to remove the ice before it becomes too thick. Failure to compensate for the extra ice will adversely affect the performance.
