| | Ebac 45 Pint Desiccant Dehumidifier $1999 Lower humidity and prevent corrosion and mold growth with the Ebac 45 Pint Desiccant Dehumidifier (DD200). The smallest range of desiccant dehumidifiers by the manufacturer, the DD series features a compact, lightweight design intended for easy transportation and use in space-restricted areas. With a patented PPS Rotor, the DD200 unit incorporates 82% active desiccant silica gel to ensure quick drying - and continues operating at temperatures as low as -4° Fahrenheit. The unit incorporates a PTC heater to ensure maximum dryness is reached immediately and maintained constantly while the dehumidifier is in use. Offering a variety of monitoring features and electronic controls, the DD200 comes with an hours run meter that displays running time and an anameter that gauges the unit's drying effectiveness. Spigot connectors allow for quick and easy installation, with anti-vibration rubber feet and carrying handles for easy transport by one person. With a high-grade stainless steel construction, the DD200 is designed to remain rust-free, ensuring high performance and a long life. Unlike condensation and refrigeration-style dehumidifiers, desiccant dehumidifiers use desiccant: a silica gel that is an extremely effective drying agent. Since desiccant-based humidifers do not produce water, they perform exceptionally well when used in cooler climates, or when a low dewpoint, deep drying or low humidity levels are required - and continue to work effectively down to sub zero temperatures. Desiccant dehumidifiers operate by drawing outside air into the dehumidifier, then processing it by passing it over a wheel containing desiccant silica gel - a powerful drying agent. As the air passes over the wheel, any moisture present is absorbed into the silica gel before it leaves the dehumidifier as warm, dry air. As the silica gel wheel continues to rotate, a small segment of air passes through a second phase of regeneration. During this phase, a second air stream is heated to a high temperature before passing over the wheel - releasing moisture into this air stream and exhausting warm, wet regenerated air outside the area being dried. | | Desiccant $95.59 A desiccant is a hygroscopic substance that induces or sustains a state of dryness (desiccation) in its local vicinity in a moderately wellsealed container. Commonly encountered prepackaged desiccants are solids, and work through absorption or adsorption of water, or a combination of the two. Desiccants for specialized purposes may be in forms other than solid, and may work through other principles, such as chemical bonding of water molecules. Prepackaged desiccant is most commonly used to remove excessive humidity that would normally degrade or even destroy products sensitive to moisture. Drierite,Silica gel, calcium sulfate, calcium chloride, montmorillonite clay, and molecular sieves are commonly used as desiccants. Rice is a common lowtech alternative frequently used, for example, in saltshakers to maintain granularity of tablesalt for effective pouring or shaking. Rice, however, is not a good general purpose desiccant since, unless immersed in an organismhostile environment like pure salt, over time may be eaten by creatures that might in turn contaminate the product that is being preserved. Which dehumidifier?
There are 4 different types of dehumidifier available in the UK today, refrigerant, desiccant, Peltier and silica gel, read this to find out about them and to help you choose which will be best for your application.
Refrigerant/compressor type dehumidifiers are the most popular in the UK, they draw air in from the room over a filter and pass it over cooling coils similar to the coils on a fridge. The coils are cold and water condenses from the air and drips into a bucket (most units can be fitted with a hose for permanent drain). The air is then reheated to room temperature and blown back out of the dehumidifier.
All refrigerant type dehumidifiers lose effectiveness as the air temperature reduces, they still work fine, it’s just that the extraction rate will decrease, they are the noisiest out of all the dehumidifiers as they operate with a compressor, the noise level is just about that of a fridge.
On the plus side, refrigerant dehumidifiers are normally the cheapest with a decent extraction rate and are very robust. They come in all sizes with some very large extraction rates.
This type of dehumidifier is very effective in the home for protection against damp and for drying clothes, there is also a huge market for them as building dryers and for flood restoration although when used in cold temperatures you should buy one with hot gas defrost to ensure they continue to work down to freezing temperatures.
Desiccant dehumidifier
A desiccant dehumidifier has no cooling coils, it uses a slowly spinning wheel made from a moisture absorbing desiccant material which extracts water from the air, a heater will then evaporate the water into a bucket (or the water can be drained with a hose). The air is reheated to about 10°C above room temperature and is then blown back into the room.
Desiccant dehumidifiers extract the same amount of water from the air regardless of temperature, this makes them ideal for protecting items in cold areas such as garages, sheds, boats and caravans, they are light and very quiet, they make for excellent clothes dryers since they give off heat and most come with a laundry mode feature.
The downside with desiccants is that they tend to be more money than refrigerant types but they are usually very good quality. The extraction rate is usually quite low, between 7 and 10 litres a day which means that 1 unit will dehumidify a 1-2 bedroom flat/house. One feature to look out for if you are protecting somewhere where the power could be cut such as on a boat is the ability to reset after a power cut.
Peltier dehumidifier
A Peltier dehumidifier usually has a very small extraction rate, probably less than 1 litre of water a day. They basically use a cold metal surface to condensate water from the air which then collects in a container. These will only dehumidify to around 6%rH less than ambient humidity and should not be used below 15°C and they will not control much more than a large wardrobe or small toilet area.
Silica gel dehumidifier
A silica gel based dehumidifier normally comes in a bag, tub or a rechargeable cassette and should not be used to control more than a box/draw or wardrobe. You can get rechargeable type which you plug in to release the moisture with heat so you can use again or there are a lot of disposable types which you throw away afterwards, these are commonly used in caravans and boats.
Which type and size dehumidifier do you need?
- For normal home dehumidifying and if working at normal indoor temperatures we would say that you should follow this rough guide for sizing refrigerant dehumidifiers:
7-10 litres – 1-2 bed house
15 litres – 2-3 bed house
20 litres – 4-5 bed house
25 litres 5+ bed house
- If you need a dehumidifier for flood restoration or for building drying we would recommend the largest refrigerant dehumidifier you can afford and are able to move around.
- If protecting a potentially cold area such as a shed, garage, boat or caravan with a power supply we would recommend a 7-10 litre desiccant type dehumidifier.
- If protecting a wardrobe or cupboard we would recommend a Peltier or silica gel type dehumidifier.
- If your application is drying clothes then you can use a refrigerant dehumidifier but a desiccant would be slightly better as usually have a laundry mode and kick out some heating also.
- If used in the bedroom we would not recommend a refrigerant dehumidifier due to noise levels.
- If your application is a swimming pool you will need a specifiacally designed swimming pool dehumidifier with hermetically sealed controls, we stock a range of these on our website www.aircomfortcentre.com
