Dial Mount
Humidifier question?
I have an older Aprilaire humidifier mounted on my furnace. My house gets really dry and has been giving me a sore throat each morning so I'm looking for some help. The tube that runs down from the humidifier is completely dry and looks like it has been for a while. Because of how it's mounted with wires and all, I wouldn't even know where to begin to add water and I also can't find the a dial (humistadt?) to make any adjustments.
There is a round thing on the side that has copper lines passing through it, but that's about it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I assume you have detach the screw and opened the top, on the left side, in the center should be a small copper line entering the box with a float inside, generally the waterline clogs with buildup. Follow the copper line to it's connection, there should be a small handled valve, try to turn it counterclockwise, if it doesn't turn, it's open. Gently close the valve clockwise. Now follow the line back to the box and find the compression nut that attaches the line to the box, unscrew the nut, when you are sure the nut is free, pull the line out of the box. Put the line into a container and turn the valve on to flush the line, clean the fitting at the box with a small wire brush. Disassemble the filter and rod, paying attention to the exact location of the rod, take the filter pad off the wheel and disinfect it, clean out the box, reassemble making sure that the rod lines up with the fan. How many times can you reuse a Pur filter?
I've purchased a Pur water mount for the faucet at home. I've noticed that the cost of the mount + filter is the same price as buying a single filter. The one that came with it has hit its end 4 times so far (where it stops letting water through) but I've taken it out and then back in each time. After putting it back in it resets the usage dial and the water doesn't stop coming out until it hits the end again. My question is how many times can you do this before it really doesn't filter the water anymore. I was going to take a saw to it to open it up and see how bad it looks but would rather not if someone already knows the answer. I think the companies try to force us to throw them away way before they actually stop filtering the water to make us pay a ton of cash for new ones. I would be most interested in a scientific explanation.
These filters work in a couple of ways. There are two types of media. There are both activated carbon and ion exchange particles. Since you want a scientific explanation, activated carbon particles have all kinds of microscopic cracks, which means they have a ton of surface area. Activated carbon is able to filter out bacteria, some heavy metals such as lead and mercury, chlorine, hydrocarbons, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like benzene. The ion exchange media trades ions for charged particles like iron, calcium and magnesium.
After a while, the capacity of both of these media to do their job is diminished to the point of not working. Water is still going to flow, but it just won't be filtered properly. What you're doing is akin to taking the air filter out of your car and putting the dirty one right back in. Exactly how long it takes before the filter is ineffective is hard to say. I suspect that the usage dial is set to the low end, but I don't think I'd use it more than twice.
