Diversion Safes Home
In career terms is it 'safe' these days to take a 1-2 year break to delve into another interest area?
I recently trained as a test analyst/engineer in one of New Zealand's larger IT cities for two years. However, in Feb 2007 I returned to my home-town to work on an old family home and see family. During this time, I have also worked odd jobs. I would like to stay in my home-town for say another 3-6 months to enjoy summer and finish work on the extended house project. I have just been offered work in an area that I find equally stimulating, as a recruitment consultant, although doesn't pay nearly as well as IT - which I hope to return to. There is very little IT work here. I am concerned that if I extend my period of absence from IT from what it is now (10-months) for say another 3-6 months, whether this will be "frowned upon" when I try to get back in. Currently, I have been told that I'd have no problem getting back in, as there is such a huge demand within New Zealand, Australia, and internationally. Also, would a diversion into this other field be frowned upon by the HR industry?
I've been in the IT industry for over 23 years.
The short answer to your question is that you should have no problem at all.
It is completely normal these days for people in all careers to to see change. When you are young in your career, you should feel the most free to branch out, try things, and enjoy the freedom.
Regardless of changes or circumstances, the most important thing is to be able to explain that period to a prospective employer in a way that impresses them
In our case:
. Going home to help out family will be completely understood. I work with many customers and friends from ANZ and I doubt there would ever be a problem with someone who took time off from their career for family reasons.
. In terms of the recruitment consultant, when you get ready to return to IT, you simply explain that while you were at home, you had a great opportunity to branch out and work in recruiting. In an interview, you would say that and then give the person one or two things you learned from the experience and *bang* you come off as the young, adventureous, but thoughtful and mature person you are!
