I can't speak for your laws, but I am a paramedic in Texas, and I don't think twice about digging through a patient's purse or wallet or medical records for information I need.

What are my rights when it comes to defamation of character?
A co-worker says that she saw me going through her purse. I touched the bag to see what the front read but that was all. She thinks that I went through it. She told her relatives- whom she works with also that I went through it. They told my boss. When I got to work, I got sent home for this accusation. I wanted to see the tape... I asked to see the tape because I knew I didn't do this. Turns out, there is no tape... just her word against mine. I was asked to sign a document admitting guilt. I DID NOT DO THIS! I didn't sign it! Is there a law student or lawyer in the house?
Just tell them that you did not commit any wrongdoing and that you will be hiring a lawyer to defend yourself if any formal action occurs.
In addition, if you continue to be harassed verbally, you will file a formal complaint with corporate headquarters and will be represented there by your personal attorney.
Then, back up those words if this incident formalizes itself.
