Dog Home Security
What type of dog is the best in terms of guarding a home and it's ocuppants?
We are moving to a new area which doesn't have much security, what type of dog can add up to the security. Thank you
Most dogs will defend the home quite well. have a little Lhasa Apso and let me tell you... he scared the carpet cleaning people out of here when they tried to get in when I wasn't home. (apartments) I have also had to do emergency dog walks and the smaller dogs, even when they are complete lovers with the family, will attack someone they don't know who has entered the house.
If you are going for the big look... then get a German Shepard. Be sure to get it through a reputable breeder because if they have been breeding inside the family, you will wind up with defects of character. German Shepard's are great with the family and loving but can also be trained to attack an intruder.
Whatever you decide.. ... don't just get a dog if you are only doing it for security reasons. Even the most protective dog needs a family that loves him/her.

Cat and Dog Home Security
I am looking for a dog for home security, what large dog will not hurt my cat and older male dog?
I have a medium size yard that is fenced but live very
near Grade Schools and High Schools, the children walk past
my yard frequently, I do not want a breed that is aggressive
with children or other pets. I live on a corner, we also
have wild rabbits and many, many squirrels and birds but I
live in a city. I am disabled and not able to walk the animal daily, but my husband insists that he wants a large dog. Please answer my question as best you can. Has anyone
ever heard of a Tatra dog? From Poland? How would I find
one?
Your husband wants a large dog, and then I guess he is planning on walking the dog twice a day or more, a medium sized yard isn't going to cut it. You have a medium sized yard then you should have a medium sized dog and it will get most of its exercise within the yard, being that you live in the city and there is so much foot traffic around you should stay away from anything that is aggressive.
I would recommend a mutt from the humane society, pond of whatever you call it in your neck of the woods. A dog from there will be fixed (healthier and less likely to roam), have its current shots and be checked out by a vet all for a fraction of the price on the outside.
