I live in a second-floor apartment in a fairly safe area. The balcony has a sliding glass door. Is it safe to leave the door open at night? Anyone who wanted to come in would have to use a ladder and the neighbors would probably hear or see something.

My parents have an under ground cellar but the door was old so they took it off. It's got concrete walls and is about 7 or more ft. under ground. My question is, is it still safe to go hide in there in case of a tornado or would they be better off somewhere else like an interior room? I understand that they should replace the door asap but what if there wasn't anytime and had to use it that night?
They would be better off replacing the doors to make the cellar fit for its purpose.
