Drop Deposit Safe
Phuket Hotel Price Drop?
A bunch of us booked a hotel in Thailand a few months ago, we paid a deposit (non refundable) of around 10% of the total cost for three rooms.
I was doing a bit of surfing and took a look the hotels web site and found that the rooms are now on offer at 33% less than the price we booked at
Should I abandon the original booking and rebook and safe myself a substantial amount of cash around $1000!!
I have contacted the hotel to try to sort something out with them; I asked to have our room upgraded to their best one which is now advertised at less than we originally paid for the basic room.
In either scenario I would save money.
Any advice will help
Many chain hotels do offer a low-price guarantee, and many online booking engines also offer something similar. If you're doing this with the hotel directly, I would consider picking up the phone and giving them a call to see if you can work something out.
Note: If you're coming in May to Thailand, I did want to advise that the prices might even drop just a little bit more (out of high season).

Hardship Withdrawal From 401k For Moving Into New Place?
I have a 401k from my old employer (previous employer went through an acquisition, now working for new employer). I am eligible for a hardship withdrawal, but my question is, can I use my hardship withdrawal to fund moving into a new place? The reason I want to move is simply because I do not feel safe in my current apartment. The neighbors are not good news, within the last 3 months, 2 residents have been arrested for drug related crimes and we have had several break-ins within the apartment complex. We are out of lease, but I just dont have the money to drop down for the deposit AND first months rent and other misc moving expenses at the time. My 401k states I can use the hardship withdrawal to prevent eviction. I plan on calling my provider (Fidelity) first thing tomorrow, but I was just curious if anyone on Y! Answers had any insight to this issue. Thanks in advance!
You don't qualify for a hardship withdrawal to pay your moving cost. What you can do is "borrow" the money for 60 days. You need to roll the 401K into an IRA first. Then you can withdraw the money without any taxes withheld. You have 60 days to put the money into another IRA without any tax consequences. If you go past the 60 days, you have to add the IRA money to your income and pay taxes at your marginal rate and pay a 10% penalty.
