Picross 3D (Nintendo DS) Reviews
Nintendo has made plenty of great games over the years, but beyond Marios and Metroids, they're also pretty good at producing puzzle games. While they weren't directly responsible for Tetris, they did catapult its popularity, and also published unique action-puzzle games like Wrecking Crew, Dr. Mario, and of course Tetris Attack (Puzzle League). They even made nonograms extra fun with the Picross series, where you literally chip away at logic puzzles to reveal pictures made of dots -- pixel art, in other words. Now Nintendo has rethought Picross entirely with Picross 3D, which is hard to imagine just by the name alone, and unfortunately, even harder to describe.

In 3D, you're picking away masses of cubes to reveal a cube "sculpture" of anything from animals to electronics. Not too different from Picross, but Picross 3D reverses the rules of 2D Picross. In the original game, you're given rows and columns of numbers that indicate how many blocks you must reveal (five in a row of 20, for example). But because you're dealing with cubes rather than squares, numbers on the faces of a cube in Picross 3D indicate how many cubes you mustn't destroy. A stack of eight blocks but with a big "5" at the top? Time to start surveying the surrounding blocks to see which three blocks you can safely get rid of before you take a time penalty.
Soon, numbers show up surrounded in circles, signifying that the total is broken up into two groups (a "6" could really be a pair of three cubes, or four and two, or so on). Squares around numbers point towards numbers broken up across three groups. All the while you're spinning the sculpture around trying to find more numbers on cubes that will help you figure out what cubes are part of the actual sculpture.

I don't blame you if you skipped those last two paragraphs. But Picross 3D has more than a few tutorial lessons with effective visual aids. In practice, it's easy to grasp how to play the game and eventually become absorbed in it. You hold the D-pad up for "break" mode, where you tap on a cube to destroy it; hold right to "paint" cubes to let you know which ones you think need to be kept, and also to keep you from accidentally hitting them. The rotate/paint/break routine couldn't sound more dull, but one's drive to erase the last block and watch the uncovered shape spin around and burst with color is too great.
