A Guide To Buying Safes For Homes And Offices

Protection Levels: different safes come with different UL or Underwriters Laboratories rating awarded to them depending upon the level of protection they provide.
Class A Safe -- Protects documents and valuables for 4 hours at 2000°F (approx).
Class B Safe -- Protects documents and valuables for 2 hours at 1850°F (approx).
Class C Safe -- Protects documents and valuables for 1 hour to 1700°F (approx).
For most home owners a Class C safe is a sure protection option.
UL ratings are also given to safes based on the protection they provide against the tools used by thieves;
TL 15 – protection against drills for up to 15 minutes
TL 30 – protection against drills for up to 30 minutes
TL 40 – protection against drills for up to 40 minutes
The ratings listed above are the ones that are recommended for home safes.
Home safes should also protect stored items from damage due to shocks such as building collapses. Combination safes are a good option as they feature a strong money chest fitted inside an equally or even stronger fir resistant safe. However they tend to be very bulky.
