How much power is needed to kill small game?
I recently purchased a Hammerli 490 express air rifle. It shoots 490 fps and I was wondering if that is enough speed to kill small game (squirrel, grouse, rabbits) And I can't purchase a higher powered air gun because I am only 16 and my parents do not have their P.A.L. yet.
IMO you need "around" 6.00fpe at impact with proper shot placement and hunting pellets for a clean, humane kill on small game(rabbit - squirrel)
575fps - 8.2gr pellet = 6.02fpe
Hammerli 490 Express .177
With most airguns you do not get the advertised fps, the makers use light weight lead pellets or PBA type pellets to inflate the fps numbers. I will assume just for the sake of argument that you do get 495fps with average weight(8.2gr) lead hunting pellets
495fps - 8.2gr pellets = 4.46fpe
IMO - Even at the muzzle, "if" you were getting 495fps with 8.2gr pellets you still don't have enough gun to kill small game.
You could hunt small birds, mice and frogs with your air rifle.
Going on a backyard safari(bug busting) is great training for future small and big game hunting.

He takes a jackrabbit at 44 yards with one shot to the head. That RWS Superdome pellet would have been traveling at 574fps - 8.3gr = 6.09fpe
I have been hunting small game(by the thousands, I'm a country boy that loves rabbit) with air rifles for 46 years. IMO 6.00fpe(575fps with 8.2gr .177 caliber pellets) or better with proper shot placement and hunting pellets will drop a rabbit every time.

20 guage remington 870 express magnum rifled barrel rounds?
im getting a rifled barrel for my 20 guage remington 870 express magnum. what would be the best rounds to shoot? i was thinking hornady 20 guage sabot rounds, but i was wondering if there might be better rounds to shoot. ive read that these rounds lose great power at a distance. i would prefer to shoot sabot rounds. any help would greatly be appreciated.
