Food Diversion
What is your view about the global foodgrains shortage?
Is it more due to the increasing food consumption in the developing belt or due to diversion of food grains (yielding starch) for fuel production in developed country like US or other compounding causes as well ?
Would help if you could cite relevent and reliable statistics to back your points please..
UN report is quoted by www.merinews.com (April 2008 ejournal issue) as saying that the world stock of food grains was lowest in 26 years during 2007, at 309 million MT equivalent to 54 days' consumption, against the stock of 585 MMT in 1999 equivalent to 115 days requirement. It also says that 36 countries had less foodgrain stocks.
USDA reports are however quoted as saying that world food production was 2075 MMT and consumption 2098 MMT during 2007 accounting for a 23 MMT shortage (drawn from reserves).
Thailand is said to have cut rice exports by 30% affecting the importers like Hong kong while India, Indonesia and Vietnam were also cutting exports affecting global importers.
Discussing the blame game for the foodgrain shortage at global level the May 2008 issue of the same website says that the US blamed India and China for the over consumption and reduction in exports while the experts blamed the US for diversion of significant foodgrains stock for ethanol production, to fight their fuel crisis.
On the other hand, the FAO was quoted as saying on the basis of detailed analysis of the data that the rise in consumption was much more in the US than India and china!!
The increase in India was 2.17% from 193 MMT in 2006-07 to 197 MMT in 2007-08 and in China it was 1.8% only from 382 MMT to 389 MMT for the same period, while it was a big 11.8% in the US from 278 MMT to 310 MMT., the hike being aggravated by diversion of a big 30 MMT for biofuel production!!
The shortage in the market plus the rising fuel costs have already hiked the global price of food grains resulting in the UN SG giving a warning of a brewing food grains crisis at global level, in the developing belt in particular.
I leave you to derive your impressions from the data. It appears better that the nations stopped the blame game and explored the scope of improving the stock position.
The fuel prices are currently falling but the exporting countries have to consider the needs of importers and plan an increase in their production and waiving the cuts in exports.

Short diversion from the food plan
Do you think all this hype from the white house about the flu pandemic is a diversion from the real problems.?
The people of this country are really suffering from rising oil prices. Immigration issues, the war in the Mideast and the reluctance of the law makers to do what is right for the country and instead counting votes. These and other issues are on peoples mind and their lips every where. This flu pandemic has a big IF. "If” it spreads from person to person, is a big IF. Yet Washington is working up this story to the hilt. It has become the headlines putting the real issues aside causing people to focus on a possibility of the country shutting down, no food, no medicine, and possibility 20 million deaths. I believe that Washington has put up smoke and mirrors with this flu pandemic to put fear in people’s hearts as a diversion to mask their failures to resolve the real problems of this country. What do you think?
I agree. This tactic isn't new to the Bush administration, anyway. They've set up smoke and mirrors since getting into office.
He clearly dodges the current important issues in America. If you consider the way he's handled the May 1st demonstration.... I mean, he didn't even react to the demonstration. He didn't address the issue at all.
Point is - the fear tactic is this administrations best friend. It happened in the Iraq War. It happened when PATRIOT ACT was passed. It happens now as American workers are being threatened.
The sad thing is, many Americans believe he is "America's guardian"- saving us from terrorist by any means necessary. I guess that's enough to justify all his actions.

What can be done to faciltate more food waste( left overs from farmers markets, restaurants, grocery stores….) to be diverted to food recovery programs (Inter Faith Food Shuttle) and composters (McGill, Brooks, Novozymes) ? The NC Food Diversion Task Force is working on encouraging this practice and would like to be of help in any future discussions pertaining to food residuals.
