Gauge Steel All
Can you gauge your ears from a normal piercing to a size 14 using a plug?
I had my lobes pierced about 10 years ago and want to start stretching them.
I'm guessing they're a size 20 and I have a size 14 plug that I want to try to put in.
The plug is also an acrylic one, and I read that the only material that should be used to size them should just be steel or titanium. Is this true and will trying to start this way work?
I'm just so confused by all of the different answers and ways to go about doing this...
and if this will work, it would be great to know the best procedure to put them in, as well as cleaning them.
(I'm guessing to clean them with salt soaks everyday)

you are correct on the sea salt soaks. do you know how to make the mixture? if not, here:
1/4 teaspoon of sea salt per 8 oz of water.
acrylic isn't good for healing piercings because well, its plastic, too porous and like silicone plugs, your ears can get stuck to the jewelry.
safe materials to wear while the stretched piercing is healing are steel, titanium, glass or pyrex.
you may be able to go straight to a 14 because of how long you've had your ears pierced to begin with, but to avoid complication, try going to 16 first. If you are uncomfortable with stretching your ears yourself, go to a piercer. they will be able to stretch your ears for you (for a small fee) and you will know that you have jewelry in of a good quality.
stretching should never hurt but it isn't uncommon to feel a slight burning sensation. it is best, even at small sizes to wait at least a month. stretching too soon can and will cause complications and excess scar tissue.

ok so this is my first piece and im doing a 4 in 1 pattern and its going excellently...im using a 1/4 inch dowel rod to make the rings and using 12 gauge steel and i see on all the sites about it they recommend 16 gauge. so will mine be stronger?
Yes it will be...if your serious about this, you might look into buying a few thousand premade rings, in stainless steel (even harder to work, but makes Rust-FREE mail!) You can order them from a spring manufactuer in your area.
