You must have a sense of humor when discussing lofty big picture topics like these. All of it is based in economic truths, and geo-political science thruths. I am an enviromentaly friendly type, and Global Warming of the planet has truths in the solutions to the problem. I am also a realist, and have an economic and business background. We can have "happy" trees and "happy" campers if we plan properly.
Enjoy,
1) acid rain damage hits scandinavian forests (deciduous)
avantage:
is creation of companies that provide cleaner burning coal burning power plants, or more need for ;awyers with environmental lawsuit backgrounds.
disadvantage:
Power plant owners need to invest more money in converting to cleaner technology to reduce acid rain created from their smokestacks. The pass is passed onto the consumer. The less trees the more global warming.
2) arctic oil spill threatens caribou grazing land (tundra)
advantage: Employees more lawyers to file class-action lawsuits. Gives environmental activists more to whine about thus increasing their base of man power. tighter regulations to reduce spills in the future.
Disadvantage: The poor fellas covered in oil. The cost to upgrade the technology, and pay the lawyers is passed onto the folks. Drilling in the Tundra for the last 30 years is a taboo subject in Congress.
3)woodland cleared for lake district leisure complex (coniferous forest )
advantage:
More people who can afford a house by the lake cna move there, raise their kids, learn to water-ski. Lumber need not be brought from far away, transported to the site, and in doing so burning lots of fuel to do so. The Carbon Dioxide in the exhaust pipes of the trucks probably sends more gas into the Ozone than if they cut the trees there, and dealt with the loss of the trees that naturally clean the air of Carbon Dioxide and emmitt Oxygen as a by-product.
Disadvantage: Loss of a beautiful forest and the air cleaning properties of the leaves. Lack of trees causes the land to dry up quicker, and remain hotter without the trees. It takes 20 or more years for a Conifer forest to re-establish itself. Builders are not very motivated to re-plant.
4)kenyan wildlife threatened by farmers ploughing and over grazing the land.(grassland)
advantage: More poor families can grow food to sell, rather than just enough to survive year to year. Extra earned cash can pay for medicines, clothes, extra supplies you cannot grow or make in that area.
disadvantage:
Less land for the endangered species to thrive in. Less land puts stress on the animals ability to find food due to the same number of animals fighting for food in a smaller hunting zone. This also causes a natural instinct to not have off-spring; if there is less food to feed even themselves. Less of a need for Wild-life managers if there is less ground to patrol.
5)global warming blamed for spread of desert .(atacama desert)
advantage: We are employing more scientists to research data for big governments, and corporations to profit somehow from this Global Warming cause/effect scenario. Incredible technologies have come about like air and water purification systems. Many of those affected countries get 10's of millions in economic aid to help the poor in that country. that money far exceeds the cost to re-locate citizens etc...
Disadvantage:
Sand retains heat, sucks all the moisture out of the passing air, grows like weeds, and is near impossible to stop. Deserts are to the Earth like Black Holes are to space.

Grazing Caribou
this is my religion...?
i am pagan, muslim, hindu, buddhist, christian and jew.
i have spent twenty years being the disciple of a siberian witch doctor. i have gathered rare plants under the full moon during a breif summer. i have been buried alive and died to the earth. my eyes have watered in the smoke of campfires while muttering prayers to the spirits who could help save a dying man. i have drunk the urine of caribou who have grazed on outcrops of Amanita muscaria and journeyed into other worlds to solve the mystery of a difficult diagnosis. i have swim with dolphins in the sea of nature and studied in brazil with the ayahuascaras of the amazon basis. this is me, my life the things i have done
what have you done?
I have traveled American and Canadian Highways, on a quest of discovery. I couldn't call it a spiritual quest. I have enjoyed walking on glaciers, visited early pre Columbian American sites, rode the Alaskan water highway, walked on deserts, marveled at trees, surrounded by coyotes at night, hiked to waterfalls and arches. I have thoroughly enjoyed my travels and the conversations along the way.
I congratulate you on your adventures and am fascinated by the Siberian Shaman that I have only read about.
