Great Glock Colt
Need help finding the right type of pistol?
I don't know very much about handguns... Brands, types, etc. With that said, I'm doing research on which pistols suit me best. I would like a gun that has good stopping power (.45?) for home defense, but not something ridiculous that costs a fortune to shoot. I plan on shooting for recreational purposes, I also don't plan on concealing it... and was looking for a gun with at least a 6 inch barrel... since I've been told the 4-4.5 inch aren't really accurate past 30 feet. What's true, and what's not true? And, can somebody refer me to particular models of guns? Smith and Wesson? Colt? Glock? Something below $1000.00 would be great. Under $700 even better

The most affordable to shoot would be a .22lr. while better than nothing at all, the .22 is not recommended as a primary self-defense round.
Minimum caliber would be .38 spl (in a revolver) and 9mm (in a semi-auto). While a .45 ACP would certainly make an excellent self defense round, it isn't cheap to shoot and for the past year or so, hard to come by. It also has a pretty heavy recoil that may not be suited for a new shooter.
Normally, I would suggest a revolver for a new shooter. They are affordable, easy to operate and clean, never jam. However, their are may autos on the market today that are almost as easy to operate and clean and are extremely reliable. Taurus, Glock, Springfield, S&W all make good polymer framed pistols in all calibers.
If I were you, I would not get too hung up on a 6" barrel. That will make for a pretty long pistol. You will get just as much performance with a whole lot more maneuverability out of a 4 or 5" barrel.
Recently I began the research into buying a new concealed carry handgun. After looking at a dozen or so handguns out there I choose the Springfield XD Subcompact 9mm. I choose it for the reviews, accessories, price and weight. I have not regretted that decision one bit. It goes with me everywhere. I liked it so much, I purchased the Springfield XD .45 ACP Service. It's a real hammer.
For what you are looking for, something the size of the Springfield XD 9mm Service model (4"). If you like, it comes in a .40 and .45 ACP. Again, .45 ACP will be more expensive and in my area, a little hard to come by at the moment.
I am not saying to go out and buy one, but at least take a moment to look at them. The grip safety is very nice. Unlike the Glocks, they are single action giving them - inn my opinion - a nicer trigger. The grip angle is also more natural to me than the Glocks.
You can get an XD for around $500.
Not to say the Glocks are not good guns. They are excellent firearms. I just personally prefer the Springfield. Grip angle, trigger and grip safety, included accessories: all influenced my decision.
Taurus and S&W also sell good polymers (just stay away from the Sigmas).
There is really no need to spend more than $600 for a good handgun. With your extra money, you will buy cleaning gear, ammo, extra magazines, etc.
So, do your research, look at some guns, ask questions. Go to different gun stores if you can. Different dealers will give you different answers and views.

What to look for in a Pocket Holster and Some Useful Features
As more and more people migrate towards CCW carry, pocket holsters are becoming more and more popular as concealment holster. Used with some common sense, a pocket holster is an excellent method of CCW carry, especially for certain applications. As a matter of fact, it's become my first choice of CCW carry. Let's take a look at pocket holsters and some useful features: * What is a pocket holster, and what is it designed to do? * What are pocket holsters made of? What is a pocket holster and what is it designed to do? A pocket holster is a small holster made to carry an equally small weapon in a front pocket, trouser pocket, or jacket pocket. Well-designed pocket holsters should do the following: * Provide a safe method to carry a weapon in the pocket - Covering the trigger area, not only protects this area during your draw, but it also keeps debris out. * Conceal the weapon - A properly constructed pocket holster should break-up the outline of the weapon in the pocket, and minimize printing. * Make the weapon readily accessible - The pocket holster should be wide enough to keep the weapon in an upright, accessible position within the pocket. * Allow for immediate and deployment- It should allow for quick access, a full firing grip, and quick weapon deployment from the pocket. What are pocket holsters made of? Today pocket holsters on the market are usually produced from either: *Leather - About 80% of all pocket holsters on the market are made from leather. Some manufacturer use a stiff grades leather, while other use a softer style leather. The stiffer leather tends to be thicker in width, which can add to the overall bulk of the holster. *Nylon - Many of the lower priced pocket holsters are produced from nylon. Personally I don't feel that nylon isn't really strong enough for the daily rigors of a pocket holster, and feel that it lacks the rigidity to properly break-up the weapon outline. If you're on a really tight budget, than nylon pocket holsters are definitely going to be something for you to consider. *Kydex - As kydex continues to evolve in holster applications, a select few manufacturers are now using it to produce pocket holsters. As kydex is significantly more rigid and stronger than leather or nylon, the kydex pocket holsters tend to be very thin. Some final thoughts: Concealability - An absolute must for CCW. Please realize that the level of concealability for pocket holsters will depend greatly on the size of the weapon carried. Pocket holsters are specifically designed for and work best with small handguns. Please be realistic with your concealment expectations. It's going to be almost impossible to conceal a Glock 19 in a front pocket holster (Although we've seen people try). Choose the right size weapon, and pocket carry becomes much simpler. Some popular weapons that we've seen conceal well in a pocket holster include: * Kel-Tec P-32 * S&W J Frames * Small Kahr models * Beretta Tomcat * Colt Pony * NAA Guardian .380/.32 * AMT Back-up
