.22 WMR for home defense?
while reviewing a certain ballistic book (Gun Digest 2010) i pondered the thought of using .22 WMR for a home defense situation. people who use AR's for home defense are firing a bullet of similar size, though at entirely different velocities and muzzle energies. but, in a close quarters situation, a .223 may be a little much and over penetrate, while a .22 short, long, or LR may be too little. so a WMR might be that happy medium between the two. any thoughts?
Note: yes i know a 9mm .40 .38 special .45 12 guage etc. would be good for home defense, but it's not good for everyone in my house, such as my sister and mother who cant handle the recoil of any of those. hence why im asking this question.
P.S. I do have a Mossberg 500 tactical loaded with winchester PDX1 12, so im not defenseless by any means.
I would say absolutely not, and I'll give you some reasons.
First and foremost, let's get this out of the way. ANY modern firearm will kill. Every year, some moron kills themselves with the paper wadding of a blank cartridge playing Russian Roulette.
The .22 rimfire and the 5.56 military round has one thing in common effectively and that's bullet diameter. That's all with respect to this discussion. They share little to no performance data in this discussion. Your post sounds like you already determined that yourself with research. Good deal! ![]()
In the discussion of self-defense, there is no such thing as "over penetration" (feel free to click the thumbs down below . . . it's cool). With regards to effectively stopping the person threatening you or your family, your most secure bet is to put two big holes per shot into the person. That gives you the BEST shot at ending the threat. Rarely is the bad guy going to cooperate in letting you get a nice, clean headshot. Also, keep in mind that he doesn't care how many times he has to shoot you nor where those bullets go. That being the case, you want to put them down immediately with as little fanfare as possible. This rules out marginal powered rounds. You want two big bleeding holes.
As for frangible bullets, they sound good, but would you trust your life or your family to them? If the bad guy is behind the wall in my kitchen taking cover, I don't want my frangible rounds giving him cover while HIS rounds aren't so considerate. HIS AMMO, on the other hand, works right well, and he doesn't care if he shoots up the place. Why give him the opportunity? Use good EFFECTIVE rounds with enough penetration to go through anyone wearing ANY conventional clothing.
IF frangible rounds were "just as effective" as normal self-defense loadings, then why don't police departments across the nation adopt them? If it were really cost, one lawsuit would change that. Also, if they all DID adopt them, the cost would drop dramatically.
If the police departments across this country aren't that worried about over-penetration when they're in scenarios that include shooting at bad guys with good guys sprinkled all around, then you MOST CERTAINLY shouldn't be.
Go with with a good conventional MODERN hollowpoint loading in 9mm to 45 ACP. Honestly, anything in that family of loadings will be more than adequate in trained hands.
If a .22 rimfire was an adequate manstopper, our army would issue it because it's terribly cheap, easy to pack, and a 105 pound kid could hold it on target in full auto. Alas, it's not. YES, it can kill. The better quesion is WILL it kill . . . if things don't go perfectly.
As for the women in your home, they can't handle ANYTHING until they practice and get comfortable and "fitted". Get them a .22 to practice with. When they get comfortable, get them a full-sized 9mm with a small grip. Start them with some light loads and move up. It's all a matter of being comfortable and finding a firearm that "fits".
My wife is small, petite, and can comfortably fire .45 Cor-Bons from a sub-compact (30 rounds before it starts to get uncomfortable . . . that's plenty). Any "small" person can find an effective level well above rimfire that they're very comfortable at. ![]()
If you REALLY think you might have to protect your life, it's worth taking the effort to give yourself and the people you love the best chance at success. ![]()
