Gun Safe How do we safely store guns without a gun safe?
We are in the Army, however, we do not personally own any guns...hence no safe. My son's godfather has asked us to store his personal weapons for him while he is in Afghanistan, but I want to ensure total safety. He will be storing an AK-47 and a handgun of some kind here. We have a child in the house, so safety is an issue. We also want to prevent theft in case of a break in as well. Any suggestions?
Bottom Line...
Tell him to "break them down" (field strip), and store the components separately. That will ensure complete safety. If he is a "gun man" he'll know what to do. I cannot imagine, your children, or a typical thief being able to find all the components, if they even know what they are, and be able to assemble it.
Pull the bolt and trigger carriers, and put them in a dresser drawer... put the rest of the rifle, and pistol wrapped in a blanket (or case) and store in the basement. Tell him to leave the ammunition at his house. Now you're beyond covered in all events!

Custom Gun Safe-hidden behind picture-cool-one of a kind
On a gun safe how much fire protection is needed, 1/2 hr. or one hour?
I am looking at gun safes and have read that some offer a full hour of fire protection while some only have 1/2 hour. How much do you need?
I would suggest 1 hour. I have several gun safes some are cheap and some are high dollar. The cheap ones ( ½ hour) I installed double layer 5/8 fire rate drywall walls around. To do this you find a place for your safe and fame out walls around it with a fire proof door. I used steel studs for the walls and a used fireproof door salvaged from a building being torn down. So basically I made a small room for the cheap safes that’s fire rated for 3 hours and it cost me $500 by using recycled materials except for the dry wall, fire rate mud and tape. But on a smaller scale this would cost less then $200. I used the same principle as the building code for a boiler room. I like the idea of the safe being inside a locked room with a steel door for added security. I also have a closed 5 gallon buckets of water next to each safe, the idea being if the heat gets hot enough to melt the bucket the water will be released, adding more time.
To be honest what time you need it determined by how far away the local fire department is and what combustables there are. If you’re miles from them then get the 1 hour. If you’re just a few blocks away get the ½ hour.
