Gun Safe Dehumidifier
If I put a gun safe in my garage, can it damage my valuables and firearms (ex. humidity, temp.)?
I live in PA and am weary of putting a gun safe in my garage. I thought about putting a "Golden Rod" dehumidifier in the safe. Is it possible for temperature changes and/or humidity to affect the firearms and contents if I put the dehumidifier in it?

Anyone have any insight if The Inhibitor or The Golder Rod is better to put into a safe in the garage? Can you use tham both together?
Certainly the Golden Rod will help keep out the humidity. I don't know what the average humidity is like ih PA so I don't know if the Golden Rod alone will be sufficient but unless you have some awfully high humidity, I would think it would be all that you will need. You can also get some silica gel dehumidifiers to put into your gun safe if you have any reason to think the Golden Rod is not enough. The silica gel containers will absorb humidity out of the air and when they are depleated, they will change color so you will know that it is time to regenerate them. All you have to do is to put them in your kitchen oven at a low temp for a few hours and they will be good as new again. A third alternative is to get some of the rust inhibitor bags to wrap each of your guns in. They work great. I have not heard of any one having anything negative to say about them.
If you are worried about high temperatures in your garage in the summer time, you can put in some kind of ventilation fan to suck out the hot air. They make some that have thermostats on them so that when the temp. gets to a preset level, the fan comes on. Just mount it in a window and it will keep the temps down to a more endurable level.
Just be absolutely sure that your gun safe is thoroughly bolted to the floor and/or wall studs so that it doesn't walk off. Better yet, if it has to be put into the garage, is to disguise it by building some kind of cabinet around it so it will look like something other than a gun safe. also, don't buy a cheap gun safe. They are too easy to break into. If you have very many guns, a good safe will be relatively cheap insurance against theft.

Dehumidifier in a gun safe?
Hello I have a small dehumidifier in my gun safe and have a question about it. I know the added benefits that come from moisture control but I don’t know if there are any disadvantages. Do I run a risk of drying the oil on my shotgun or will it be fine.
The danger of damage to firearms, from a dehumidifier. is not to the gun metal but rather to the wood on your firearms. The dehumidifier can remove moister from the wood and cause it to crack. (It is arguable that if the wood had been properly cured to start with that this would not happen.) I would only use a dehumidifier if your safe is not in a climate controlled environment. I recommend desiccant silica products. When changed regularly, they are the best way to control moister without damage to your firearms
