Gun Safe Trucks
To join a gun club or take private training, what is the screening process?

I am a person who keeps cash in a safe instead of having a bank account. Owns my truck, has never made payments or have any credit cards. I want to keep my government visibility "footprint" to a bare minimum. Do you get screened, checked, and ultimately registered with local, state and/or federal government just to join a gun club, go to a range or take training classes?

Not by the government in the US normally. Gun clubs are pretty much against that sort of thing.

But to join a private gun club, the club will usually screen you to make sure you are not a psycho or something. You have to usually be sponsored by someone and show up to some committee meetings and such before being allowed to be a full shooting member.

The activities of gun clubs are under a microscope in the public eye, and most of them are very cautious and safety conscious because of the scrutiny they receive. So, you just have to make yourself known and make them comfortable that you're not going to do something stupid that'll make them look bad.

When US combat units began arriving in Vietnam in mid-1965 they were initially based in coastal cities. Munitions and supplies were delivered by sea at ports to directly supply the newly arrived forces. It was not long before American units began to venture into the countryside to engage the VC in the areas they controlled. Many of these areas were well inland and forward bases had to be established. These bases had to be continuously supplied and required a great deal of tonnage. Supplies had to be transported overland from the coastal ports of Qui Nhon and Cam Ranh Bay at Bong Son, An Khe, Pleiku, Dalat, and Buon Ma Thuot. Later, more inland bases were established and more seaports opened. The logistical efforts expanded and it became a major effort to run convoys to these bases. Discover the history of the little-known but vitally important improvised vehicles, or `gun trucks`, that were developed in-theatre in Vietnam by the vehicle crews themselves to protect convoys from Viet Cong ambushes in this highly-detailed, fully-illustrated title from our popular New Vanguard series.

Army Tank Can't Crush Gun Safe

How can I feel safer at night? We have an alarm system. I have a gun. I always check the locks, yet I still

keep one eye open at night. This started after my son was born. I thought it was related to my postpartum depression, but my son is almost two and I still feel this way. Since our truck was stolen while we were on vacation (stranding us in TN for several days), it has gotten a little worse.
I moved to this house 4 months ago.
In case anyone wants to get on the gun issue, it is in a locked safe next to my bed.
The exercise suggestions are good, but I guess you've never had a little kid. There just isn't any way for me to do that at night before I go to sleep. I, also, work full-time and go to school full-time.
BTW, when my hus is home with us (3-4 nights a week), I sleep great and I feel safe.

This isn't a particular simple question because any number of things could be contributed to your fears.

If you have any depression and/or anxiety your brain chemicals are going to be "off", and having that kind of chemical imbalance can actually make you think differently (as if you're "under the influence" of a substance that affects your thoughts). It would really make sense for you to talk with a professional to see if you may have either depression or anxiety (and if you're afraid at night, that's obviously at least that much anxiety).

Since you were the victim of a crime you're living with that "rude awakening" that people often get after being victimized and suddenly realizing "it CAN happen to me". That's one more reason you may want to consider talking with a counselor. People who have been the victims of crime can have some version of PTSD from the shock they experienced when they were victimized.

Do you live in a neighborhood where a lot of strangers pass by? Do you go to places where there are a lot of "iffy" people you think may follow you home? While nobody is ever 100% immune to crime, there are some neighborhoods where crime is more likely to take place. I live in a suburban, cul- de- sac-type neighborhood and feel pretty safe, although I've had my occasion noises in the backyard that made me afraid. The point is, though, that busier neighborhoods or areas where strangers are going by frequently could make a person more nervous. If, by any chance, that's the case, I wonder if your fears are telling you you should live someone where you feel more comfortable. If you live in a wood, isolated, area that, too, can give some people the spooks.

Do you have any windows (particularly big, picture, windows or sliding glass doors) that don't have drapes, shades or blinds and that give you a view of nothing but darkness at night? If so, put up some blinds or drapes. Pull all your shades down at night and close all curtains.

Are there bushes/shrubs outside any windows that could block that someone could hide in or climb on? Trim them way down. Keep lights on outside your doors, use a floodlight (that isn't awfully bright) to light your yard.

Try having a cup of mild coffee with lots of cream (to the point where it is almost-but-not-quite oatmeal color). I know this sounds bizarre, but coffee that isn't strong and that has lots of cream in it makes me feel calmy - sometimes almost lethargic(!). Have a cookie with the coffee. Again, I know its sounds bizarre, but a cookie can be calming (contrary to what many people have believed, which has now been proven wrong). Low blood sugar can make a person feel nervous and frazzled. Don't drink regular tea unless its de-caf. It makes people hyper. Turn your television down, sit and have your nice drink (milk if you don't like the coffee idea), and maybe light a potpourri burner with a calming scent that you love. In other words, turn night into something nice rather than something spooky.

Leave enough lights on in the house that you still have a nice, peaceful, night-time, atmosphere but that don't make you feel like you're in "darkest of night". A nightlight in the bathroom, a small lamp in a hall, the light over the kitchen sink, etc. If you leave your computer on have beautiful, calming, wallpaper on the screen. Put on some boring talk radio (volume low, so its more droning than ever) while you sleep. It doesn't matter who is saying what. It can keep your mind a little tuned away from your inner thoughts.

You have the alarm system. I'm betting you keep a cell phone near you through the nights. You can try any of the things I suggested if you haven't already.

If you know in your heart that your fear is actually more than is healthy (and not that its ust there because you know you're in a high-risk area, in which case the fear is actually reasonable) you really should talk with a professional about it.

While it may not be the safest thing in the world, people all over the country sleep with their windows open in Summer and don't keep a gun. They may just figure if someone comes in they'll beat them to death with a heavy pan or baseball bat, and other than that they live their lives without fear at night.

If you feel small and helpless for whatever reasons you may, you may want to take a self-defense course for women. That can help women feel more in control and less helpless.
