Are the legal penalties more severe if you steal firearms from vehicles and resell them, than other goods?

Let's say you know of a kid who has been making some easy money by scouting out trucks with visible gun racks, then stealing the firearms after opening the door locks using a technique known as "bumping" (yeah, funny name, but look it up, apparently it's legit).

Then he'd resell the firearms to various under-the-table buyers.

So, if this kid got caught, would the legal penalties be more severe because the items stolen and resold happen to be firearms, or would the penalties still be based on the monetary value of the goods stolen?

The jurisdiction is eastern Texas.

Anyways, not to blame the victim, but why would anyone leave unsecured firearms inside of an unattended vehicle? Sometimes I have to leave my handgun inside my car like when I go into a federal building, but I always hide it inside a locked secret compartment. That's what you're supposed to do according to anti-theft experts.

Bumping is a real technique, but it's illegal.

He'd get charged with theft, and then he'd get charged with firearm offenses, too. So he'd rack up more charges with the same crime.

The firearms are secured if the vehicle is locked. Your kid will not be able to argue that the guns were not secured.

Does Hand-Swabbing at Airports Detect Firearm Residue?

I just heard about the new hand-swabbing procedures being used at airports to detect explosives hidden on passengers. Does this procedure detect firearm residue? I legally own rifles and handguns and I am active in a sport-shooting club. I'm just wondering if I might have trouble with hand-swabbing tests at the airport if I have recently fired a gun. Any ideas?

The swab will detect nitrates. Gunpowder is made of nitrocellouse with varying amounts of nitroglycerine. Both of these are explosives and may show up on the swab.

Wash your hands thoroughly after using firearms.

Washing hands after firearms use is also a good idea because gun primers contain lead styphanate and the firing of guns can produce airborne lead from the bullets.
