HandGun Safe Boxes Why can't Americans live without guns?
You reduce the chance of having school shootings.
You reduce the number of convenience store robberies and holdups.
You reduce the chance some drunk thug could pull out a gun and shoot you.
You reduce gang war shootings.
You make streets safer for everyone because people will be less aggressive. How many little punks out there think they're tough because they have a handgun?
Let's face it, you're not going to beat the Chinese Army with your Glock or Hunting Rifle from Wal-Mart. So give up those fantasies and buy an X-Box!
Ah, but you haven't heard the lovely conservative propoganda on the issue: "the NRA promotes gun safety." Can they write better comedy? Anyway, i agree that it would be highly beneficial. The only thing they do have a point about is that the illegal trade of weapons would increase drastically, but the prohibition argument can be made for any issue. I don't actually support outlawing them, but i agree with the current "impediments" to just buying one. the criminal background checks are certainly a help. if freedom is the argument they make then i counter with a line from the late George Carlin "I have the right to tell them that they have no right."
EDIT: "You are dry shaving me"--actually the ban was lifted in a recent supreme court case.
Your Guns Might Be In A Safe But Are They Really Safe
Gun safes of some sort are an absolute must for the gun owner, whether a person owns a single handgun for personal protection or they are an avid collector with an arsenal that could overthrow a small third world country, you have a responsibility to keep those weapons locked up and secure from misuse and theft. Is that enough? Is it truly enough to a place a firearm into a safe and then close and lock the door or should you also incorporate the use of a trigger locking mechanism?
The use of trigger locks is widely contested by gun safety advocates, politicians, and gun owners. Why the controversy, why should you not do everything in your powers to make sure that firearm is both locked in a safe and secured with a trigger lock? Trigger locks are dangerous and they are often misused by well meaning persons, the misuse often times resulting in misfiring of the weapon with the potential for deadly consequences.
The cardinal sin is placing a trigger locking device on a loaded weapon, although the packaging and instructions clearly state that the device is only to be used on an unloaded firearm, this warning is often looked by the consumer. If the gun is already unloaded and incapable of firing a projectile, then there is clearly no need to place a lock on the trigger. This exercise would be akin to installing a car alarm on a car that has no battery, its pointless.
The golden rule of gun safety is keep your finger off the trigger unless you are going to actually fire the weapon. Trigger locks as the name implies are attached to the trigger of the firearm, you cannot put it on or remove it without touching the trigger. If the handler has forgotten to unload the weapon or has chosen not to unload the weapon, they run the risk of accidentally discharging the firearm in the process of attaching or removing the lock.
Trigger locks can be improperly attached still allowing the firearm to be discharged with the lock in place. Even with the lock properly attached they can still be rather easily defeated by thieves or even mildly determined children.
Trigger locks do not prevent the gun from being loaded with ammunition. Although the lock may have been attached correctly to an unloaded firearm, there is nothing that prevents the firearm from being loaded after the fact.
Statistically there is no evidence that supports the notion that trigger locks prevent accidental discharges, there is however evidence that supports the fact that trigger locks actually can cause accidental firing. In 1994 the state of California that has adopted mandatory trigger lock legislation had an increase of 12 percent in accidental firearm deaths; whereas the state of Texas with no such legislation reported a 28 percent decrease.
The bottom line is that there is one surefire method to keep your guns safe and prevent tragic accidents, keep them locked securely in an appropriate gun safe. Trigger locks not only provide a false sense of security they can actually cause the one thing they were designed to prevent.
