In 2008, the first album from These New Puritans appeared, presenting a band of young Brits who had clearly soaked up the lessons of brainy post-punk outfits like the Fall, Wire, et al., not only in terms of the Burroughs-esque, cut-and-paste approach to composition and the terse, angular riffs and rhythms, but in the tendency to approach an album like an art-school project, with an armful of theories behind each decision. Fortunately for all concerned, These New Puritans -- like all powerful musicians -- operate on a level that connects emotionally and viscerally before the cerebral side is even engaged, so the whole thing plays out in a non-pretentious way. That's how it is on their second album, Hidden, as well, but the band hasn't been standing still in between releases by any stretch of the imagination. Where the first album was full of blaring guitars and powerful drums -- however minimally arrayed and artfully deployed -- Hidden is a different beast entirely; in fact, it's tempting to say that it's barely even a "rock" album, except for the fact that no other descriptor seems to fit any better. In place of those Fall/Wire riffs of old, Hidden offers a greater emphasis on electronics; in fact, there seem to be scarcely any guitars at all. And where its predecessor hit you over the head and knocked you down with its ideas, Hidden -- true to its title -- prefers to sneak up on the listener. Some of the most striking features of the album are the brass and wind orchestrations. Three atmospheric, orchestral instrumentals subdivide Hidden -- one at the top, one at the middle, and one (also including Steve Reich-like percussion, wordless choral vocals, and a brief dash of spoken word) at the end. The wind players pop up at a couple of points in the "band" tunes, too, and it's a fair guess to say that co-producer/former Bark Psychosis frontman Graham Sutton has something to do with it all. Sutton's presence is also significant in that his old band's sui generis art rock is as close as you'll come to a precedent for what's happening here, aside from perhaps late-period Talk Talk. Besides the brass and winds, the synths and programmed beats that mix hip-hop, dubstep, and drum'n'bass styles are the dominant sonic presence. "Fire-Power," meanwhile, finds singer Jack Barnett spitting out a restless tumble of words over a beat that wouldn't sound out of place on an M.I.A. record, while "Hologram" takes things in yet another direction, using jazz piano in combination with winds and more of those Reich-like lines. Ultimately, Hidden is the sound of an ambitious young band as eager to use every tool at its disposal as it is to avoid studiously doing what's been done before. ~ J. Allen, Rovi

What can help my internet?

When I connect to the internet, there is a little icon that reads " ISP connected. Speed 52.0 Kbps." I also have a "virtual memory low" notice to pop up sometimes. Sometimes my internet is so slow. Others,...it is great. I don't know much about computers. I know you can buy, buy, buy more stuff. With the exception of spending lots of money, is there anything that I can do to speed it up / clean it out a bit? I have System Mechanic and use it often. But I didn't know if there's another way to get that hidden junk out. (I got a used pc and I'm sure there's some of their stuff still inside.) Or is there a setting I can modify to help? Thanks.
It is dial - up,...through my phone service.

Well, it sounds like you have an old computer with very little memory installed. You also have Dial Up to gain access to the internet, which is always pretty much going to be slow.

Depending on how old your computer is and what hardware is installed already you may choose to install more memory and do a clean install of your system since I bet this hasn't been done in years and keep your dial up account for the internet.

Or you can go buy one of the cheaper computers that are avail today usually the cheapest is around $350 and it's probably going to be 10times better than what you have now. You then can also purchase high speed DSL Even their slowest package will 10 times faster than your dial up and it's probably only $10 more a month than dial up.

So, for about $350 now and $10 a month more than dial up you can start experiencing a great WEB Browsing.

Or spend about $150-$200 to get some more memory and have a tech come over and clean your system, maybe even a clean install.

*If your system is old (like 7 or more years, I would recommend saving and buying a new one rather than putting money into something that will not even be compatible with applications that come out over the next few yrs).

Another missed opportunity is the Fair Tax that most likely will not be implemented by a Congress bent on sloganeering and personal political benefits. This type of consumption tax brings out the hidden money in the underground economy, after all even drug dealers and criminals of all sorts have to buy things and eat. A well balanced Fair Tax that ensures low income adjustments is the only way we can unleash our economic growth by taking that tax burden from the people who have to make things while competing with foreign state supported makers. The Fair Tax, and a reasonable tariff on makers with unfair labor costs overseas, can make the difference NOW!
