Hidden Wall Vault
Advice on redoing my fireplace - want to add a mantle, new stone facing, and cover the chimney w/drywall?
I have a 2-story vaulted ceiling in my living room. The current fireplace / chimney has no mantle and is red brick that has been painted white. I'd like to add a simple mantle, some marble, slate or other stone facing below the mantle and on the brick hearth on the floor.
Above the mantle, because the brick chimney goes up 20 feet, I'd like to cover the chimney with some drywall so it hides the brick and adds some depth to the wall. So my questions are:
- Are there any risks in covering the existing brick with mortar & stone? Given the brick is structural, not decorative, I don't want to tear it away.
- Are there problems covering the brick above the soon to be built mantle with drywall? Not sure if given it's a chimney i need to worry about any potential heat or fire code issues.
- Any thoughts on how much this should cost?

As far as doing a face on your mantle-- stone,marble or any other fireproof material can be used with chickenwire and morter. WARNING--YOU CANNOT COVER THE CHIMNEY WITH ANY THING THAT IS NOT FIREPROOF--This is not a choice it is a safety point! Also when you put your mantle on-for two reasons--draw a 45* angle from the top face of your fireplace --- this angle will show you placement of mantle according to how far it will extend out . Going back to your exposed chimney--you can grind and buff the brick for contrast or extend your facing all the way up to the ceiling. I'm a BIG fan of river-rock for that mansion look,but as long as the material is FIREPROOF--let your imagination run wild and have fun. What is the best way to move my cable outlet to a different wall?
I am moving into a 2nd story condo with vaulted ceilings. I want to put my tv on the opposite wall that the cable outlet is currently on. I can't run the cable down under the floor because I am on the second story and I don't think I can go up because I don't think there would be enough room in vaulted ceilings. I could be wrong on that one though. I heard about removing the baseboards and hiding it in there but there is one of wall where the window goes all the way to the floor with no molding/baseboards. Does anyone have any ideas? I would like to run cable for an outlet and also two pairs of speaker wires for rear speakers from one side of the room to the other. Thanks.
OK....if it's Actually CABLE...Call the Cable company and have them ADD a Cable line on the other wall......
They have the equipment to do it right and make it look good....However, you may want to add an electrical box and RF Wall plate, if that is true, then INFORM THE CABLE GUY and let him punch the hole where the wall plate will go....then you finish up behind him with your plate and box.....
As for the speaker wire, it sounds like hiding it behind the baseboard, bringing it out by the windows, then back in behind the baseboard is the ONLY way to go.....Many lumberyards also carry smaller mouldings or special corner mounts to hide that "Window wiring"
