Hiking Camping Dog
Will my small dog be safe if I take it hiking/?
Our dog weighs around 5 pounds and are going camping in a remote part of the wilderness.
What are the chances of him being attacked by an eagle or a hawk?
Should I keep him on a long line at all times, or would it be better if he stayed at home with plenty of food and water.?
I'd like to take him with us, but want him to be safe. Are there any other dangers that I should know about?
He should be fine, as long as you are proactive in watching for hazards, but I would keep him on a lead. Make sure you include a doggie first aid kit and your handy cell phone with the number to a vet hospital close to where you will be.

I want to choose the right medium to large family dog--any recommendations?
I like the look of sporting breeds but am worried about the activity level. The dog will get daily exercise but realistically it wont be for hours like some websites recommend. We do occasionally go camping/hiking. MUST be okay with kids. Would prefer no/low/moderate shedding. I have owned a medium sized mutt before but am looking for a purebred this time. Not interested in a Lab, Golden Retriever, Greyhounds, or any of the poodle mixes. I know im picky but i was hoping someone could recommend a good family dog type--G.S.P.? too crazy? Dalmatian? Too crazy? Any help would be appreciated. thanks
Okay, definately not a GSP if you aren't going to be able to do a couple hours worth of activity several days a week. I love the dogs, but they need room to run. Dalmations aren't known for being great with kids, so I wouldn't suggest that either. You may want to look into a Weimerener. The females would be better suited for your situation. Find a breeder that is NOT breeding for field/working/hunting. You don't need that. They can be great dogs, however sometimes they have very bad separation anxiety. Little shedding and not much more than a bath every now and then is required. I currently own a Doberman. Don't let the breed stereotype scare you away. Their bite rate stats are much lower than shepards, goldens, and labs. They can be great family dogs especially if raised in that situation. I take mine camping with me on a regular basis and she loves it. Females tend to be a little more stubborn, but make better guardians (the mothering instinct). Also they tend to be more laid back in the family situation and not as hyper as the males can be. They adapt very well to your family situation even if it changes and only want to make you happy. However, you have to be prepared to have the dog follow you, or your family members wherever you go. They want to be with you. They don't blow a coat the way a lot of dogs do, simply because they tend to not have an undercoat, so it's simply dead hairs falling out when new ones grow in. Not any kind of seasonal shedding. Vacuuming every couple weeks takes care of the hair. They should only be bathed 3-4 times per year, they have dry skin, and they tend to not have much of an odor (unless they roll in something). They are also easily trained and very smart dogs.
Another dog would be a Vizla, don't know much about them, but the ones I have met are really nice and seem to be good with most people.
Also, a lot of people are mentioning Springers....in my experience they tend to be a bit nippy with kids, so I'd avoid those.
