I am new at soldering Silver and Gold for jewelry making. I am going to buy a soldering torch for this, but am not sure at the best way to go for a begginer. Should I get one of the soldering guns from say Home Depot? Or would spending the money and buying a $250-$500 torch made especially for jewelry be the way to go?? I don't have a whole lot of money, so any bit I could save would realy help!!
Buy only a professional torch. Use a good one and don't settle for a cheap torch or you'll find yourself buying another one later. I'm using the "little torch" for all the goldsmith/silversmith work I do. It should fit within your budget. Good luck! Sarit.

Who knows about self-piercing "sleeper" earrings?
I was born and live in Italy, I'm keen on jewelry and love wearing and collecting earrings more than anything else. While investigating about the ear piercing methods used before the "piercing gun" was invented I read something about the so-called "sleepers" (self-piercing hoop earrings, popular in the UK and North America until some decades ago). Since in Italy such self-piercing hoops were absolutely unknown (our grandmothers had their ears usually done at home with a sewing needle and silk wire), I'd like to know something more about the "sleepers" and their piercing process. Did you hear about the subject or experienced it on your own earlobes? Did it hurt?... Tnx! Oh, I'm NOT planning to have my own ears pierced with sleepers. My earlobes were pierced with a "regular" gun when I was 9 and won't receive additional holes. I'm simply curious to learn more about sleepers cuz living in Italy I know nothing about them!
Hey, I had the "sleeper" earrings a few years back and they worked well. I used them to do my second wholes. It was kind of hard trying to match them up on the ears for both sides, but it wasn't painful and it didn't take any time at all. The procedure took about 3-5 days and it was totally sanitary. All you did was treat them as if they were clip on earrings and they finally pierced through the skin within a few days, pain free!
