AT WHAT AGE DO BUNNIES START TO DO THE NASTY??? LOOL?

Heyy, I’m getting two baby Holland lop bunnies for a excellent breeder, a few hrs away. Never had any bunnies but can’t wait. I’m a dog person work where the police train the k-9 unit dogs, but recently my f**king apartment, passed a rule, of no more dogs.

Anywhoo, I’m getting 2 so that when I’m not there, they have each other to play with, along with lots of safe room, toys, ext.
So, yeah my question.. when do rabbits start to have bunny love. I want to get them spayed/nurtured, but at what age is that done! Vs. the age they start to make bunny love. I don’t want after bring home two bunnies, to have a breeders worth, even thought that’d be soo freaking cute!
Soo, hope you can help. I might consider getting two of the same sex… but really wanted a male/female soo I can see their different personalities/behaviors.

I think rabbits can reproduce at about 6 months of age, and since there is only a 31 day gestation period, I STRONGLY suggest you have them both neutered BEFORE you get them home. Call a local veterinarian and discuss it with him.

A Stick Is an Excellent Thing (Hardcover)

A Stick Is an Excellent Thing (Hardcover)

$30.21

The trappings of childhood change from generation to generation, but there are some timeless activities that every kid enjoys, regardless of the year they were born, their gender, or their socioeconomic or cultural background. Marilyn Singer and LeUyen Pham celebrate these universal types of play, from organized games like jumping rope, hide-and-seek, and hopscotch to imaginative play like making mud soup or turning a stick into a scepter for a king. Short, lyrical poems and bold, eye-catching illustrations capture the energy of a group of children in one neighborhood as they amuse themselves outdoors over the course of a summer day.

The King of Iron Fist Tournament 2...

Mastiff Owners.. How are they with children?

My husband and I are expecting our first child in July. Shortly after the birth, my husband will leave for Iraq, and will return the following year. His heart is DEAD set on a Mastiff when he comes home. I think they're amazing dogs, so I have no objection.

While we both have large dog experience (Malamutes, St. Bernards-I know, mastiff family) we have no experience with the King of large dogs. We're interested in an Old English Mastiff. I've done lots of research, but would like to get some testimonials from people who have them.

We want a "toddler proof" dog, with an excellent temperment. My husband likes that they're intimidating to people that know nothing about them. He wants a dog that he feels safe "leaving us with".

Any advice?

A well-bred English Mastiff is typically very good with children. They're exceedingly patient with high pain thresholds. I've seen pictures and videos of little kids literally sitting on an EM's head.

An excerpt of a quote from S. Edwards in the 1800s:
"His courage does not exceed its temper and generosity and in attachment he equals the kindest of his race. His docility is perfect; the teasing of the smaller kinds will hardly provoke him to resent, and I have seen him down with his paw the Terrier or cur that has bit him, without offering further injury. In a family he will permit the children to play with him and will suffer all their little pranks without offense."

It's very important that you research a breeder carefully. Here are some sample questions you should ask, as provided by the Mastiff Club of America:

http://mastiff.org/faq/questions_breeders.htm

Work with the breeder closely before purchasing from him or her. If possible, meet the parents.. and the grandparents.. so on and so forth. You're looking for composed, docile, patient dogs who have a history of being excellent family dogs.

Check out these personal stories about people who made the mistake of purchasing from a low-quality breeder -- Bella's is especially affecting.

HOWEVER, although EMs are often fantastic with kids, you must consider their sheer size. They mature very, very slowly, although their body grows like a weed. Before you know it, you'll have a rambunctious 8-month puppy who might weigh well over 100 pounds.

My boy is pretty small for his age. He's 22 months and only 156 pounds. He **LOVES** people; to him, there is absolutely no food or toy that can beat meeting a new person. He would never intentionally harm a friendly person. But, he's a big dog. We had a friend of mine bring her dog over for a play-date last summer. She brought her young step-siblings, I think their ages were about six and eight, maybe. Maybe six and seven.. five and seven.. I don't know. Anyway, he loved them. He spent most of the time stretched out on the ground for tummy-rubs. But as gentle as he was with them, he still ended up knocking the little boy over. It was completely unintentionally.. he did it by wagging his tail. That's all. The boy was knocked right off his feet by being hit by my dog's tail. It's VERY easy for such a large dog to injure a child!

Heck, he injures us. He's bruised our legs from wagging his tail. I often have bruises and puncture wounds on my feet from him stepping on them.

Also, pretty much all EMs go through something called "zoomies." It usually happens at least once a day. For just a few minutes, they tear around like little (or not so little..) tornadoes. If you're in the way, you're likely to be pushed over or stepped on. My boy is young and rambunctious. Although he rarely acts out, when he gets overly excited, he sometimes jumps.. and these guys have claws like bears. Being lightly raked by one of his paws while he's jumping results in these big, ugly, raised scratches that take awhile to fade. I knew a woman who once went to the doctor, and the doctor thought her husband was abusing her because she had some scratches and bruises over her body. :P She had to show him a bunch of pictures of her EM to convince him it was just her dog.

So.. My dad chose an EM for the same reasons as your husband. He's very particular about security, and he likes that the EM is an enormous and intimidating-looking dog with a bark like thunder, patience of a saint and heart of gold. We wanted a dog who would be safe with kids.. because we're all like a bunch of kids ourselves. We like to play with his floppy ears, poke him, massage him, prod him, tease him, rub him, lean against him, sit against him, et cetera, et cetera. And he tolerates everything very well. BUT, although my uncle with a developmental age of seven does live with us, we don't actually have little kids to worry about.

WOW, I'm seriously rambling like crazy. Anyway. So, to recap:
- ***CHOOSE A BREEDER CAREFULLY!!!*** You want to rule out timidity or aggression as best as you can.
- Socialize the puppy very, very well. Get him used to as many situations as possible! Socialize with kids, adults, the elderly, loud noises, trains, cars, dogs, cats, whatever.
- Pull his ears (not to hurt him!!), play with his paws, play with his tail, poke his tummy -- get him used to everything very early. Reward him for tolerating you. Wiggle his toe, give him a treat. Start small and work up to manipulating the whole foot.
- Make sure he associates your presence around feeding time with good things. Do things like taking his bowl away and dropping in something super-delicious and then giving it back, so that he associates human hands near his bowl with great things.

Oh, and last of all.. know that NO DOG IS TODDLER-PROOF. **NEVER** leave a young child unattended with a dog. The dog may injure the child unintentionally.. or intentionally. Better safe than sorry.

I lied -- last of the last of alls -- join MOC, that online community I linked you to. CHECK IT OUT THOROUGHLY. :-)
