Laminated Locks
Has anyone compared the lock system of different laminate floor brands? Do gaps appear in a floor with time?
I'm considering laying laminate floor but heard some brands have weaker locking systems that will allow gaps to form between the boards over time. Can anyone comment on their long-term experience with different brands, and can you comment on this phenomenon. Brands I'm considering include Tarkett, QuickStep, and Mohawk. Thanks.

Is it ok to put an inexpensive lock-together laminate wood floor over old carpeting?
Looking to spruce up my old house to sell. Carpet in bedrooms is old and worn, thin loop type carpet with attached backing. House is very old and floors are un-even. Tearing up old carpet and scraping and leveling floor would be tons of work. Ok to put down a foam underlayment over the old stuff and lay wood floor over?
You have to take up the carpet, because laminate flooring needs to be put on to a hard surface.
Depending on just how un-even your floors are you may be able to put the laminate down over the floors without leveling them - if you use a thicker underpad/foam lining under the laminate.
Take up the carpet and then take some digital photos of the floor and head off to the flooring store and show them what you have to work with and ask for their suggestions.

A snap together laminate floor is fairly easy to remove. Since the pieces snap together they will unsnap with little problem. I know I put down a laminate floor and then took parts up and then relaid them.
Relaying a used carpet that has been stored with it's pad is another matter all together. That is not a simple matter and will not look good enough to make your landlord very happy. You will need to reinstall the tackless strips and then stretch the carpet into place. Even a professional carper layer would have trouble getting it to fit right.
Re-floring is not a do it your self job. It is not simple as rolling up a rug during summer. Weather its carpet or hard wood / laminate flooring, you can't do it, or more easily put it won't come out the way you hope it to be, unless you are a flooring contractor. Just buying all the tools and equipment to do a swap will cost more than hiring a contractor.
1) Once carpet is removed, its pretty much trash. Most likely can not re-install. This is not a rug.
2) Uninstalling hard wood floring for re-use is impossible. It is glued on. If you were to stap it on without adhesive and spill water on it, then you have wet wood causing floor rising and bending. If you still want to do it yourself, make sure you apply a sheet of vinyl on the floor before you lay the wood to prevent moisture from concrete ruening your flooring from the bottom.
