For a laptop, what is the difference between a universal adaptor and one from the laptop manufacturer?
My laptop adaptor needs to be replaced. A generic universal adaptor which is much larger and clunkier is almost half the price of an adaptor from the laptop manufacturer. Other than pricing, size and weight, what differences are there? Quality? Safety? Warranty period?
The universal adaptor's much cheaper. Will that do?
universal adaptors can be used on many laptop models. dell, gateway, sony, etc. manufactured adaptors are just for that one specific model and/or brand.
as for the differences. it all depends on what kind you get. there are many universal adaptor brands. some are cheap some are expensive. some are exellent quality some are bad so on and so forth

Laptop Safety
New laptop, what are some precautions I should take?

I just got a Dell Inspiron laptop... What are some things I should keep in mind to maintain it intact? For long battery life and just general safety tips? What are some things I should buy to keep it safer?

Laptops are subjected to plenty of hard use, & one item that often gets damaged is the charger (or adapter) cord.
The constant bending, plug & unplug actions, and other stresses, causes the copper wires inside the cord to become 'work hardened' which makes them brittle and eventually snapping, which leads to power loss to the lapper.
For new units, and replacement chargers, one thing I do right away is reinforce the cable end where it plugs into the lapper.
Making this cord more resilient is the idea & can be done with a couple of methods.
1) Use a hot glue gun and apply glue from as near the tip connector as possible, down the length of the cord 3-5 inches, building up the glue thickness to twice the original cord diameter, or,
2) Use a semi-flexible, heavy tape (like cloth athletic tape or similar) & wind around the cord; again to about double the original cord thickness.
Both methods restrict the movement (and stress on the cord end) extending the usable life of the cord considerably.
Also; When your system is behaving itself, do a driver backup to a single CD so you can get to them again.
It gets harder and harder to find them, and many places charge to get them.

Use the 'back up all drivers' for the first BU; & keep it with your unit.
And; One disk performance item is to 'compress contents' and 'allow index service'. These help optimize file recovery speed & save disk space.

If your new lapper has a phone modem slot, keep the junk out.
Cut the male end plug off an old phone line (with locking tab left on) and insert it into the open slot...this keep stray junk and unwanted metal from entering the gap, and causing shorted connections.
