per month. From past experience, for ever $10 discount in price, the number of sales increases by 5 each month, and for every $10 increase in price, the number of sales decreases by 5 each month. Find the price function.
How did the text book get P(x)= 1090-2x? Can someone please show me step by step?
We know:
P(120) = 850
We know if we want to sell 5 more cameras, price has
to drop $10, so:
P(120 + 5 ) = P(125) = 850 - 10 = 840
P(125) = 840
Think of (120, 850) and (125, 840) as points on a line
of a graph. The formula for a straight line is:
P(x) = y = mx + b
(eq1) 850 = m*120 + b
(eq2) 840 = m*125 + b
We want to find m and b. We will then have the price
function. So subtract eq2 from eq1 to eliminate b:
850 - 840 = m*120 - m*125 + b - b
10 = m*-5
10/-5 = m
-2 = m
Now plug m into eq1 to solve for b:
850 = m*120 + b
850 = -2*120 + b
850 = -240 + b
850 + 240 = b
1090 = b
P(x) = y = mx + b = -2x + 1090
P(x) = -2x + 1090 = 1090 - 2x
