Large Mule Deer
Is a remington 700 cambered for 30-06 the gun for me? Boar, deer, elk, is this an all around good gun?
I live in Ohio where you cant hunt deer with a rifle,(This is fine with me by the way) but here is my situation. There is a lot of wild boar that I could hunt and we are planning to go caribu and mule deer hunting next year. I am a big beliver of the right gun for the right game but I don't need more than one large rifle since 99% of my hunting is done with shotguns and varmit rifles. I don't know a lot about large rifles but I was told that the Remington 700 in 30-06 will work game from boar to elk. Anyone agree or disagree? Anyone have a better suggestion?
Yes, The 30-06 is a fine cartridge. It will perform well on the game mentioned. Also being 30 caliber you get that vast bullet selection from exceleraters for varment up to 220 grain for big heavy game without having to reload and that is a huge plus. Another plus is that the 06 is so popular you can always find shells for it in any small town your hunts may lead you should you run short for some reason. As far as the Rem. 700 I believe it to be a great rifle for the money. I have owned them in several 30-06's, 22-250's,.270's, also in the .300 wheatherby and the .22-.250 Rem. varment special. I shoot rifles alot the .300 I'm refering to and the 700 V. I still own and will never part with the .300 shoots just under a 1 inch 5 shot group at 100 yards and the only work ever done to it was by my gunsmith whom did an excellent trigger job for me. He says the trigger in them is comparable to a timny trigger. I have killed several Hogs, Blacktail deer, Mule Deer, Black Bear, Antelope, and of course the predeters. Coyotes and so on. I was fortunate enough to go to S. Africa to hunt plains game such as Kudu, Blessbuk, Impala,Mountain Reedbuk,Gemsbuk, and WartHog. African game even the plains game I mentioned is unbelievably tough. On this hunt I took the .300 and when I got there guess what my Pro Hunters were useing to back me incase something went wrong. A 30-06 in a 700. I could go on and on but I wont. EXCELLENT choice. It will out last you if takin care of !!

Would you hunt wild boars and deer with a Mosin Nagant rifle?
I bought my Mosin Nagant WWII rifle 91/30, it's stamped 1943 and was manufactured in the Izhevsk factory of the Soviet Union, and I really liked it! I received it last Friday and I went yesterday to fire it at my local gun range. The recoil was hard (felt like a hammer hitting my shoulder bone) and it kicked like a mule, but I was surprised by its accuracy and that I didn't even have to adjust the iron sights.
If you had one of these and you went hunting, would you hunt wild boars and whitetail deer with the Mosin Nagant? How effective would this 7.62 X 54 R cartridge be on large game?
I bought mine for $70 from www.jgsales.com and I am impressed. This rifle is now my 3rd gun. I own a Bushmaster AR-15, a Rossi .38 special revolver, and now a Mosin Nagant WWII rifle.
It will be very effective on large game. The 7.62x54R cartridge is the Russian equivalent of the American .30-06 round and delivers very similar performance. The 7.62x54R will push a 150 grain bullet at 2,953 feet/second and delivers 2905 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle. Provided you use commercial ammunition designed for hunting (instead of military surplus full-metal jacket ammunition) its more than adequate to take any large game animal in North America.
The only issue I can see with using a Nagant for hunting is lugging the nearly 9 pound rifle over miles and miles.

If you wan to “diss” my research, you might want to look at some source other than this Layton guy, and /;or Valerious Geeist, who, IMO has some rather odd ideas. My “bible” on these matters is the Smithsonian Book of NOrth American Mammals, which lists “blacktail deer as a subspecies of mule deer. The reason for this is that some populations of “blacktail deer” have been seen happily interbreeding with “mule deer” in locations where the environments of the two types overlap. So if you're going to claim I'm totally unreliable, you'd better try something else.
