Light Hides
Is my hood light too bright in my 30 gal fish tank?
Whenever I turn on the hood light in my 30 gal fish tank all of the fish scramble to find a place to hide as if the light were rays of death. Why is this? Is my light too bright? I've only had the fish for not even a week, is it that my tank is still fairly new and unknown to them?
This is not unusualy and they will usually do the same thing when you turn the light off.
I try to turn on the aquarium light after I turn on a lamp first if the room is dark to minimize any shock they may feel.
If the light you have came with the tank it is unlikely it is too bright.
If this is a new tank buy an ammonia test kit and be sure to check ammonia levels as your new tank cycles. Cycling is the process of natural bacteria building up to neutralize the ammonia. It will take roughly a month. You may need more frequent than normal water changes during this time.
After the first month you will need to perform weekly water changes of around 15-20% to insure their health.

What is a good ir transparent material to hide an infrared light source?
I want to hide my unsightly ir light source so I'm looking for something like a plastic sheet that is invisible to ir, but doesn't let visible light through. Any ideas of what I can get for this that is cheap?
I believe the material you're searching for is called polysulfone (spelling questionable). It's the same black plastic used to encapsulate IR LED's. Most common plastics and glasses absorb strongly in the infrared, so you've got a difficult problem here. I have a faint recollection of long ago successfully using a piece of exposed and developed 35 mm film for this purpose. I can't promise success, but I'm pretty sure it worked. Woah madame this one truly rocked. this had so many hidden connotations. At times what light hides darkness reveals and its better to be bling folded than see the world in its true color it can be an anticlimax.
