How is the stock market different from gambling?
I feel the stock market is akin to gambling. (poker, a game of both luck and skill as opposed to a slot machine.)
My friends say that it’s not the same, but I don’t understand how that’s true. When you look at companies like GM, enron, Bernie Madof and so on, I don’t see how it’s not gambling. After all, they looked like solid investments with good track records and people who ‘invested’ heavily lost everything.
How is this different then just going to a casino and ‘dropping money’ on a card game?
When it comes to the stock market, I have neither luck or skill, so I need to find other ways to invest. I’m averse to any kind of risk. Someone explain to me why this makes sense. I don’t get it. (other then the fact that the bank pays next to nothing.) I think it’s sad we are forced to gamble with our hard earned money just to have a chance to have a halfway decent life when we retire
In a lot of ways it is. Gambling, speculating, and investing are sort of just arbitrary milestones on a continuum of risk. I think its the level of risk that differentiates them. A defender of investing would tell you that with investing the risk is much more managed, where in a gamble its pretty much a matter of pure chance.
Roulette and craps is gambling because they are based almost entirely on chance. Betting on horseracing could be more akin to investing if you are knowledgeable enough about the horses and the jockeys and the various conditions that come into play. But really its still just a bet, an investment really need to somehow aid in some kind of growth, other than the just wallet of the bettor.
If you just pick a random stock and hope it goes up (or down in a shortsale) you effectively are just playing roulette. It becomes an investment when you have gathered enough knowledge about the stock to make an educated guess that you will probably not lose money.
If you look at the dictionary, they are basically the same except one pertains to a game and one pertains to enterprise.
Also, on Wall St, investing is more thought of in terms of something that's beneficial to the economy and to society: making a loan to for a company to start up or to build a new factory, where as gambling is thought of as deals that are intended purely for one party to derive profit from another, like placing a bet (buying credit default swaps) that company X's stock price will be below Y price by Z date.
A "bet" would actually have a different definition than an "investment." A lot of what happens in the stock market is just a bet.

In the Slot marks the first album of vocalist Hubert Tubbs. he possessed a throaty more muscular voice a few shades lower than his predecessor. While it was serviceable, Tubbs' voice didn't have the same grace and agility as Williams'. On the rollicking "Just Enough and Too Much" the difference is slight and the track is one of the band's most potent tracks. The ballads were where the contrast is most striking. "As Surely As I Stand Here" and the "The Soul of a Child" display not only a drop off in lyrical quality, but also the clearest indication that the band did indeed miss Williams' skill at making even bromides ring. Oddly enough, the great and too brief B-side "Stroke '75" wasn't included here. After many failed attempts, band and singer do end up on the same page. On "Drop It in the Slot" and "On the Serious Side" the groups' trademark rhythm section and the horns come on stronger and match Tubbs' more volatile style. This effort in effect put an end to the string of "classic" albums from the group. agp card that supports pixel shader 1.1?
hey guys i just bought the orange box, but find to my dismay that my current graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400) doesn't support pixel shader 1.1, meaning that I cant play Portal or TF2 (fail 
) I have an AGP card (if im right in saying that its a brown slot? anyway that card input has three ... er... prongs .. if I remember correctly.) yes I know its a very old card, but I'm happy with its performance in all areas but this one, (it runs Half life 2 surprisingly steadily) and don't really want to drop a large amount of money on an upgrade, so I'm asking if you know of, or if you can link me to info showing me, what AGP card i can get that wont be too much extra that supports pixel shaders. thanks alot!
Almost any recent (i.e. manufactured within the last 7 years) AGP card will have the required Pixel shader support.
Here are a few reasonably priced options- the Radeon 2600XT is the best performer, but any of them would provide a boost over your current card.
