It would only work if there were no atmosphere to slow it down.
The theoretical speed needed for orbital launch would cause air friction sufficient to melt any known engineering materials the vehicle might be made of.
To examine a more practical example of this same principle, read Heinlein's 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress', where he proposes such a gun to shoot mineral ores from the moon to earth, thereby avoiding the atmospheric drag.
BTW, at 4g acceleration, the gun would have to be over 1000 km long to reach escape velocity, even with no atmosphere on earth.
