Office Floor Security
What was your longest amount of time, of being stuck in an elevator?
I work at an office building located, on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Last Tuesday afternoon while I was bringing a blackberry, to one of the secretaries on the 34th Floor. On my way to return to the 10th Floor, where my workstation is located, I was heading towards the lobby, where I had to transfer to another bank of elevators to reach there. I stepped into car #23 one of 8 which serves floors (25-39) it stopped on the 30th Floor, when 2 attornies got on after the doors closed, it had stopped about 3 or 4 feet below the floor level. I soon realized I've got stuck along with them. I pressed the alarm button then security responded quickly, then summoned 3 maintenance men from Otis Elevator finally got me along the the 2 lawyers out of there. I have spent almost an hour in there. I'm sure some of you, even those who are claustrophobic, had worst experiences than I have. I remember back on July 13, 1977 and on August 14, 2003 during those blackouts.
I've never been stuck more than a few seconds, like you think it's gonna stick and it doesn't but I always worry about the cable snapping and the car dropping to the bottom and I'd be stuck under all that crap and stuff.

Network Setup Advice for an office of 30+ users!?
There is an office composed of 2 floors, 2 DSL lines, 30+ terminals and some servers.
I need to minimize downtime, make sure the network can handle HEAVY traffic loads internally and via the web, and stay away from devices that are used in homes (your average router/switch, etc...)...I need wired/wireless access for mac, PC and linux terminals. Security and firewalls are also an issue.
Given the wide range of products offered by Cisco and such high-end companies, I am lost.
What do you recommend and how do you recommend I set this network up?

For a much larger network we use Linksys SOHO-type wireless routers for our wireless needs (mainly visiting customers with laptops), Cisco routers and hubs, virtual LANs and lots and lots of Cat5.
The servers are almost all rack-mounted Dells (of various vintage), with enough UPS to run for about 30 minutes, and enough air conditioning to keep a person chilly with 120 degree outdoor temps. Everything is backed up off-site daily (tapes picked up every night).
About the only way you eliminate downtime is redundancy. Raid5 everything, dual power supplies, and a contract for immediate hardware replacement in case of catastrophe. And we're still fine-tuning after about 10 years (and always will be, as new technologies come around).
