Plate Bulletproof Body
I'm an amateur inventor and I have 1/20 inch titanium plate. Is it bulletproof?
I'm going to be shooting it with a .38 and a .45. Maybe a .303 rifle as well. Will this penetrate? I want to use the titanium in a body armor plate I am designing to be worn.
Is it safe to wear the prototype myself and get my assistant to shoot me? She is very wary of this but I told her I would use this to find the right answer.
So...is 1/20 inch titanium bulletproof?
SORRY yes I will use a dummy first. But my assistant said what if its only 50/50? The dummy might be fine, but then next shot goes thru. So I wanted somoene with a METALS or ENGINEERING background to let me know if it is 100% bulletproof. Sheesh.
It might stop a 22. Anything bigger will probably penetrate. Titanium is roughly equal to mild steel in strength. It is sometimes used for armor, because it is half the weight of steel, but 1/20 of an inch doesn't stop much. Penetration depends a lot on range and angle of impact, and there is still a lot of probability involved. You have to do a lot of test shots to get a level of confidence, and you need more than one plate because material properties vary.
It would be fun to shoot it up and see what happens, but please don't be a test dummy. Armor tests are never done with live people, although I did once see a guy shoot himself with a .38 to demonstrate a kevlar vest. He was nuts. There is no reason to do that. Even if it doesn't penetrate, it is painful and can leave big bruises, broken ribs, and burns.

I can afford both, but if there is no difference between the two I plan on getting galls brand vest. I also plan on getting a insert plate, so if I do, do you think there is a big difference between these two vests?
Also, anyone hear about dragonskin body armor? I hear its pretty tough, but Im sure its expensive as hell. Any one else hear about it and have an idea where to find it?
