why does my i pod cause a power surge on my usb port when i connect it to my p.c.?
The Usb port or the ipod cable may be damaged. try plugging into another port and if possible try using a new usb cable. if thats part of the ipod cradle then try using a different one.

What sort of power comes down lines to sound speakers or earphones from devices like DVD players or i-pods?
Is it significant? How do i work it out?
You will need to be a bit more specific.
Pulses of electricity create sound, they basically control a electromagnet in the speakers to make the speaker cones vibrate and create sound.
The wattage of the amplifier determines the amount of electricity that passes to the speakers (which is of course variable by the volume control). To avoid overpowering the speakers the wattage of the amp should be equal (or less than) the wattage of the speakers. This information can normally be found on the back of the amp and speaker if on a basic High Fi system. You will have to look at the specification in the manual for the power of the amp and speakers for your I-pod or DVD player.
